In response to the atrocities perpetrated at our nation’s capital on Jan 6, 2021, ArtSeed is suspending all but essential programs until March 1, 2021. This pause will allow us more personal time for expressing concerns to persons in power via phone, email, social media, and post. Many of us feel an urgent need to see immediate legal consequences for all perpetrators, inciters, and enablers of that unprecedented and deadly event. Simultaneously, as Founder of ArtSeed, my mes...sage is to insist on swift implementation of generous federal arts and public works funding to the most distressed sectors of society. This funding should be first distributed to communities of color, hardest hit by COVID and systemic racism, then extended to others who are suffering economically and are vulnerable to misinformation. Self-expression with the arts can provide safe outlets for those who feel that they have been treated unjustly. The creative process and the resulting artworks can open minds and hearts. Projects might include spoken, written, drawn, danced, or sung pieces, theater, photography, or murals which tell stories or give expression to the frustrations, fears, and hopes of this moment. In taking action now, we can prevent further violence. The 1939 Work Projects Administration (WPA) was an American New Deal agency, employing millions of job-seekers to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings, murals, and roads. Let’s ask our representatives to bring back the WPA. ArtSeed has been giving a voice to others for twenty years! ArtSeed thanks our guests and presenters for celebrating with us on Thursday, December 31, 2020. Because of you, our broad range of ages, races, cultural backgrounds, and gender identities came together to share music and poetry. Some conversations touched on our past experiences and others acknowledged our present challenges. Thirty-four ArtSeed Alumni, friends, family, students, and first-comers gathered online to bring in 2021. We miss seeing you all in person.

Hello! ArtSeed is having a virtual reception opening via Google Meet for this year's exhibition, Only Zombies Race to Mass Extinction! 5 - 7 pm on Thursday, September 3rd. The gallery features art made by the fifty and more Summer Fine Arts Intensive interns, students, artists, other presenters, and attendees ranging from 7 to 87 years old. They listened, watched, and engaged off-screen in supervised activities that are meaningful to them at this unusual moment. For three w...eeks, from Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, we made our own ink with spoons and candles, worked with words, clay, and computer programming, collaborated on animations, learned about Piero della Francesca, Museum of the African Diaspora, and more. The whimsy of art-making morphed into conversations about how environmental issues disproportionately affect the most marginalized and disadvantaged people worldwide. Who gets to be on computers and make art? Heartfelt and humorous exchanges planted seeds for our upcoming exhibition in San Francisco’s Presidio and in a virtual gallery at www.artseed.org. See more

As a countdown to our Annual Earth-Week Art-a-thon on April 25, 2020, we are hosting some fun challenges to do up until the day arrives. Join us on our Instagram, Twitter, and/or Facebook to join. The first two challenges have started, but it isn’t too late to join! Please continue reading about them in this post. You are encouraged to post your work on any of the social media provided and share your post with us! Use the @ symbol plus any of our username handles for Instagr...am, Facebook, and Twitter. Then hashtag #ArtSeedArtAThon2020. As well, you may send your work directly to us. These challenges end on April 18 according to our website, but feel free to continue to April 25! If you complete at least 3 days of the challenge, with your permission, we would love to share your work on our pages! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Challenge 1 - Letters 1) What it is: Compose a letter every day to someone or something you appreciate having in your life during these trying times. It may also be something you wish could change. 2) Prompt: Letters are one of the oldest ways of connecting people from afar before social media. People have shared countless communications in the form of writing and visuals to get their ideas and feelings across. With social distancing, we can connect to our roots and do this again. It doesn't have to be just a traditional letter. It can be a poem, a drawing, a story - any or all of them! Visuals are highly recommended. The main point we want to get across is our appreciation and concerns. 3) Materials: Writing implements, paper, and envelopes/stamps (optional). 4) Take a look at the origami envelope-making photos for a reference! _________ Challenge 2 - Leaves 1) What it is: Create a visual art piece within the shape of a leaf. 2) Prompt: Leaves represent both nature and connection. Growing and thriving on trees and plants, they are connected by common roots and work together to provide sustenance to the environment around them. Humans, in a way, are connected like this. With everything happening with COVID-19, we need this connection more than ever. Even though we have limited in-person contact, we can still connect with each other through the common roots of our ideas and feelings. How are you staying safe with COVID-19? How do you care for Earth and the environment? How do you think COVID-19 is affecting the environment? 3) Materials: Drawing implements and the leaf template. 4) Please download the photo with the leaf template and draw away! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our other social media: https://www.instagram.com/artseed_sf/ https://twitter.com/ArtSeed
