Bessie Smith Bessie Smith, also known as the Empress of Blues despite coming from rural Southern poverty, was able to sell 6 million records within five years of being signed in 1923 by Columbia records. She quickly became the highest-paid Black artist of her time due to her powerful voice and musicality that was often compared to a sermon from a Baptist preacher. She was also bisexual!
