Art Docents of Los Gatos

The Art Docents use many of Paul Klee’s paintings in both our classroom lessons and in a mini-video used this year for asynchronous learning at the Los Gatos Union School District. His artworks are joyous, comedic and masterful at the same time, making them accessible to art lovers of all ages. Paul Klee’s work is a sort of visual wit... which he invites you to share. That, for me, is much of the charm of 'Nearly Hit'." - Grace McCann Morley, SFMOMA’s founding director. Morley chose Klee’s 1928 painting when LIFE Magazine asked her to write about a favorite artwork in the collection. She said Klee’s brushstrokes created a background full of life, while his economic lines produced a shorthand symbol of a narrow escape. "Together," Morley wrote in 1955, "they express a momentary mood of fright at the recognition of danger, and startled relief at realizing safety. I still smile or laugh to myself when I pass it." We share this work in honor of Morley, who opened the museum on January 18, 1935. At night the sculpture came to life as visitors were able to choreograph the lighting in real time using physical gestures on their mobile devices. Vivid beams of light were projected across a massive scale as the result of small movements on spectators’ phones. In the daytime, the sculpture’s delicate yet monumental form is subtle, blending in with clouds and sky.
