Another great invitation from the Art Deco Society of New York to join their virtual visit to Sydney Australia and their Art Deco Architecture. THIS SATURDAY! 2:00 PST California time! TO REGISTER: https://www.artdeco.org/sydney-art-deco... ADSNY Member $15.00 ICADS Member $15.00 Special discount for members of fellow Art Deco Societies (leave us a message in comments and we will give you the password for the discount) Jazz Age Order $12.00 Non-Member $20.00 In this fascinating and visually delightful presentation, internationally renowned author and speaker on Art Deco, Peter Sheridan, will explore how the global influence of the Art Deco design aesthetic became evident in Sydney’s architecture as well as in many other areas of daily lifealthough much of this is still unrecognized and undervalued today. Sheridan will begin his engaging presentation by sharing the history of Sydney and illustrating how it evolved much like the sprawling suburbia of Los Angeles, into a city rich with stunning examples of Art Deco, rather than like the designed cities of New York and Melbourne. In this exploration we will discover: The special Art Deco commercial and civic buildings in the city's central business district The best Art Deco residences in the region A world class hub of apartment blocks in the Potts Point/Elizabeth Bay area A unique collection of pubs and hotels around the city in all iterations of the Deco style . . . and more! In his acclaimed book Sydney Art Deco, Peter Sheridan, for the first time, identifies and showcases the beauty and breadth of Sydney’s built Art Deco heritage. ADSNY is excited to share these findings with you, in addition to some of the accompanying local lifestyle elements from the 1930s and 40s such as art, furniture, and radios! Even though this event is online, it will include a live PowerPointwith wonderful images that you will be able to see directly on your computer screen, tablet, or mobile deviceas well as a Q&A session with participants. Can't join us at the time of the live event? No problem! Those who register will receive a recording of the entire program a few days after the live presentation. When you sign up for the program you have the opportunity to watch, or rewatch, the recording at a time more convenient for your schedule.

With heartfelt thanks to our former Design Director, Imani Hamilton, we are very proud to unveil our new logo on our updated website. We believe it is fresh and modern, while still heavily invoking the style and esthetics of the Art Deco era, which our organization is dedicated to preserving. Also, of course, a huge thank you to our Web Director, Katrina Morales for her terrific amount of guidance, time, and effort! Our website, which can now be found at www.artdecosocietyofc...alifornia.org, has been visually refreshed to incorporate this new logo as well as colors and fonts that complement it. We restructured the content to make it easier to navigate and updated the listings of theaters, restaurants, etc. in the Deco by the Bay section to the best of our ability. Of course, things are continually changing in our COVID world, so we encourage you to do your own research before attempting to visit any of the places advertised on our website. Relatedly, our office email has been updated to [email protected]. Please update your address books so our emails don’t go to your spam folder! We also added a blog! Be sure to check it out for the latest announcements from us, especially about preservation projects and organization-wide changes. The ADSC Events page will always have the latest information about the status of our events. Newly posted to our blog is our Anti-Racism and Inclusivity Action Plan. It is our intent as a member-supported and registered non-profit to focus our efforts toward ensuring that our words, planning, deeds, and constructs do no harm to BIPOC and marginalized people in our country. Finally, and most importantly, we have published our official harassment policy, which you can view on our website. This harassment policy, developed in partnership with the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild (GBACG), is to ensure all interactions with ADSC, whether online or in person, are safe and welcoming. We are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, or personal style. We look forward to celebrating with everyone in person as soon as it is safe to do so!

THIS SUNDAY! September 27 from 3:00-4:30 A zoom lecture by Art Deco Society of California Preservation Director Therese Poletti : Architect TIMOTHY PFLUEGER ON TREASURE ISLAND (GGIE ) Registration is required: (but no charge to "attend" on ZOOM) Among the architects in charge of creating the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939-1940, Timothy Pflueger was one of the most influential, and his Federal Building was seen as one of the few modernist designs at a fai...r that was mostly the last gasp of the Art Deco style. He also designed the California Building, the San Francisco Building, and the Court of Pacifica. In all of these works, he hired many of his artist friends, such as Ralph Stackpole, who created the iconic sculpture of Pacifica. In 1940, when the fair was reborn for a second year, Pflueger hired the famed Mexian muralist, Diego Rivera, to create a massive mural that would eventually find a home in San Francisco. Rivera was a key attraction at the dynamic Art in Action exhibition, where fair goers could watch art work in progress. See more
