'Njideka Akunyili Crosby: The Beautyful Ones'was the first Los Angeles solo exhibition devoted to the work of the painter Njideka Akunyili Crosby (b. 1983, Enugu, Nigeria). The exhibition presented a new body of work in which she considered the potential dislocation of identity after expatriation, simultaneously reflecting on her Nigerian heritage and traditions, contemporary postcolonial African cosmopolitanism, and her experiences in the United States, where she has lived... since 1999. Concurrent with 'Njideka Akunyili Crosby: The Beautyful Ones' was 'Two Films by Akosua Adoma Owusu'. The presentation included the award-winning 'Kwaku Ananse' (2013) and the experimental short Intermittent 'Delight' (2007). 'Njideka Akunyili Crosby: The Beautyful Ones' and 'Two Films by Akosua Adoma Owusu' were on view at Art + Practice from September 12, 2015 - November 21, 2015. Organized as a part of 'The Hammer Museum at Art + Practice', a Public Engagement Partnership supported by a grant from The James Irvine Foundation, the exhibitions were organized by former Hammer assistant curator Jamillah James. - IMAGES: (1) Detail of Njideka Akunyili Crosby, 'I Still Face You,' 2015. We want to take the time and shout out our collaborator @firstplaceforyouth. This year marks their 10th year in Los Angeles. What better way to congratulate and celebrate them than to share the impact of their good work?! Every week in December, we’ll be highlighting one of their youth who have received an A+P scholarship. Today, it’s Karina. Karina, a young mother, previously received Scholars funding to support her transportation and activity costs while earning her hig...h school diploma. She is now enrolled as a Theater major at Los Angeles Community College. This quarter, she’s earned an A+P scholarship (again!!) which will allow her to purchase a tablet and tripod to help her attend online classes and produce video content. Please follow @firstplaceforyouth to stay up to date on all their good work. And join us in cheering for Karina and her family as she realizes her dreams and adjusts to new challenges. #fosterchange #fosteryouthawareness #artandpractice #aandpscholars #aandpandfirstplace Image courtesy of First Place for Youth

For the past two years, A+P has collaborated with the California African American Museum on a program series called Points of Access. The series was developed as an outlet for artists of all stages to receive practical information on creating a sustainable career and practice for themselves. This year, Points of Access is focusing on a central theme: Documentation. In partnership with CAAM, the third installment of a four-part series exploring documentation as an intentional ...and value-driven process looks at the importance of visual and graphic design for artists. The evening will feature a moderated panel of speakers from various visual backgrounds such as videography, digital curation, graphic design, web development, and photography who all use a visual medium as a means for documenting processes, ideas, people, or events. Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We HIGHLY recommend that you re-listen (or for the first time if you missed it) to John Mohawk’s 1997 lecture at The Schumacher Center for New Economics entitled ‘How the Conquest of Indigenous Peoples Parallels the Conquest of Nature’. @lookout_fm presented the talk as part of our #6degreesla symposium in collaboration with @craftcontemporary. Mohawk was a Seneca master singer, Orator of the Turtle clan, Scholar, and Activist. We’d all do well to listen to what he had to say and reflect on its need in our present day especially today. Find the link in our bio via 6.
