Congratulations to Armory Teaching Artist Sichong Xie, who was selected as the Marciano Art Foundation Artadia Awardee, presented by the nonprofit grant making organization Artadia as part of their 2021 Los Angeles Awards. Sichong will receive $25,000 in unrestricted funds to support her practice, which combines movement and material in body-based sculptural forms, including masks, costumes, and other objects. Her work raises questions about identity, politics, cross-cultural...ism, and the surreal characteristics of her body in the ever-changing environment. The other 2021 Los Angeles Awardees, Paul Mpagi Sepuya and Adee Roberson, will both receive $10,000 awards to support their practices. Robinson, incidentally, was part of the Armory's 2019 exhibition "Calafia: Manifesting the Terrestrial Paradise." Visit our link in bio or linktr.ee/armoryarts.org to see Sichong's website and learn more about her art. . . . . First Image: Sichong Xie, courtesy of the artist. Next Thursday! Join us for "Active Voice Part 1: Lockdown, One Year Later" the inaugural session of our new conversation series. Almost one year ago today, California became the first to issue state-wide safer-at-home orders... shuttering cultural venues and museums. A year later, most arts organizations remain closed and some may sadly never open again. On March 25, artists William Camargo and Dan McCleary will look back at the events of the last year, discuss their impact o...n the arts in Los Angeles, and consider their lasting effects on cultural production moving forward. Visit our link in bio or linktr.ee/armoryarts to learn more and RSVP. You will receive the Zoom link once you do. . . . . "Active Voice: Conversations at the Intersection of Art, Community, and Social Justice" is a new monthly conversation series hosted by Armory Center for the Arts and inspired by the conversations and reflections in the year under lockdown orders. As difficult as the challenges of the past year have been, they have also offered some opportunity for the arts community to reset, root out inequities, look beyond business-as-usual, and imagine different models built through collaboration. . . . . @billythecamera @artdivisionla #DanMcCleary #ActiveVoice #Lockdown #LockdownArt #LockdownLife #PandemicLife #OneYearAgo #OneYearLater #Conversation #Reflection #SocialJustice #ArmoryExhibitions #ArmoryArts See more

A year ago today, I took this photo as I left the office. All teaching artists were pulled out of the schools, probation camps, community centers. Tanya Aguiniga’s videos paused. Student work sat patiently on the drying racks. I thought it would be three weeks max - which at the time seemed unthinkable. Here we are a year later. We have experienced some of the most challenging times and yet we are thriving because of the community of artists, staff, board members, supporters, students and educators who have rallied to insure that we can continue. Art will help us heal our spirits and rebuild for the next generation. My deepest gratitude to all of you. ~ Leslie A. Ito, Executive Director Anchored, 2004 Logan Wood Ceramic 22x11X7

Get our 3 newest publications in time for Christmas at Homage Pasadena, including the catalogue for our upcoming Alison Saar exhibition, plus the first ever monograph on the under-recognized painter and experimental film pioneer Sara Kathryn Arledge. Because of increased COVID safety measures, we've instructed our staff to limit their exposure, which means mailing online catalog orders will have to wait until the new year. However, our friend and neighbor Jill from Hömage has... volunteered to sell our new catalogs for us at her retail location in Old Pasadena, and will give all proceeds back the Armory! Please support Jill and other small businesses. Get your Armory catalogs at Hömage today, and pick up some more high quality gift and jewelry while you're there. Visit www.homagepasadena.com or their Facebook page for store hours and location. . . . . Please note: Hömage cannot mail Armory catalogs via their online store, they are only available for in-store purchases. . . . . #holidayshoppingmadeeasy #holidayshopping #artbooks #alisonsaar #sarakathrynarledge #belowtheunderground #pasadena #onlyinoldpas #armoryexhibitions #armoryarts See more

Tonight at 6:00 PM PST: Join us for a conversation and Q&A with Tanya Aguiñiga and Jackie Amézquita (pictured) in conjunction with the exhibition "Tanya Aguiñiga: Borderlands Within/La Frontera Adentro" at Armory Center for the Arts. This Zoom event will be hosted by Heber Rodriguez, the Armory’s Exhibition Program Production Manager. Visit our link in bio or armoryarts.org/borderlands-conversation to get the Zoom link and learn more about the artists. . . . .... Images: Tanya Aguiñiga, "Tensíon" (2017), performance photos of border wall intervention, performed with Jackie Amézquita. Image courtesy Tanya Aguiñiga and the AMBOS Project. . . . . Tanya Aguiñiga and Jackie Amézquita both learned to backstrap weave from Mayan women in Chiapas (Southern Mexico) and Guatemala respectively. For Aguiñiga backstrap weaving represents the resistance and resilience of pre-colonial culture and knowledge. It is a tool for creating fiber that records the bodily connection to labor. In this performance, Aguiñiga and Amézquita are tied together through the border fence, the former in Douglas, Arizona, US, and the latter in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico in constant view of the US Border Patrol. Their tension and support became crucial in one another’s weaving. This site is of particular significance because it is the town where Amézquita attempted to enter the US illegally as a teenager to reunite with her mother. . . . . @TanyaAguiniga #MujeresArtistas #ArteFronterizo #BorderArt #usmexicoborder #lafrontera #everydaylafrontera #resist #communityactivism #artivist #artivism #borderwallprototypes #Pasadena #ArmoryExhibitions #ArmoryArts See more

Ready to scream on Sunday? With the 1996 film "Scream" serving as a guide, artists Maura Brewer and Paul Pescador present "State of the Union," a virtual debate on the day after Halloween (scary!), the first day of Daylight Savings (falling backwards!), and 2 days before the General Election (the spookiest day of the year!). With artist Mandy Harris Williams serving as moderator, Brewer and Pescador will face off on themes such as victim complexes and the fantasy of escape as they explore archetypes of "victim" and "killer" in contemporary politics. Visit armoryarts.org/state-of-the-union below to learn more and get the Zoom link for Sunday's performance (November 1, 5:00 to 6:30 PM PST).

This Thursday, Dec. 10 at 6:00 PM PST: Join us for a conversation and Q&A with Tanya Aguiñiga and Jackie Amézquita in conjunction with the exhibition "Tanya Aguiñiga: Borderlands Within/La Frontera Adentro" at Armory Center for the Arts. This Zoom event will be hosted by Heber Rodriguez, the Armory’s Exhibition Program Production Manager. Visit our link in bio or armoryarts.org/borderlands-conversation to get the Zoom link and learn more about the artists. . . . .... Against the ongoing persecution of migrants along the US-Mexico border, the exhibition "Tanya Aguiñiga: Borderlands Within/La Frontera Adentro" highlights Aguiñiga’s long-standing commitment to thoughtful and urgent dialogue on immigration politics, transnational identity, and community activism. A lifetime of crossing back and forth has placed Tanya Aguiñiga emphatically on a threshold, navigating a space that may be seen as neither one place nor anotherwhere hostility, heartache, and hope coexist, says Irene Georgia Tsatsos, the Armory’s Director of Exhibition Programs/Chief Curator. These works reveal her efforts to understand the trauma of occupying these multiple places, physically, psychically, and metaphorically. . . . . Tonight! Virtual ArtNight at the Armory features the debut of a new mini-documentary about Los Jornaleros del Norte, a local band comprised mostly of day laborers. The group formed in 1995 after an ICE raid at a free mobile health clinic event. Omar Sierra, one of the main vocalists of the band was present during the raid and decided to write a Corrido (ballad) about the incident. As time went on, the Day Laborer Band expanded and became a fundamental tool in the organizing e...ffort, performing for day laborers at corners and centers, for local unions, for students, for activists, for teachers, and more. Visit armoryarts.org/artnight to join tonight's festivities and stream this powerful short video starting at 6:00 PM (PDT). We'd like to extend our sincere thanks to our partners at the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and the Pasadena Community Job Center for the vital services they provide to this community and for their help in producing this video. . . . . #ArtNightPasadena #ArmoryArtsAtHome #ArmoryArts See more
