Archer Basketball and Track & Field athlete Nadia C. is ALC’s senior Instagram takeover feature for this week. Check out the strategies Nadia uses to stay fit, what she has learned about herself during this time, and how she experiences a sense a community. What are you doing in your day to stay fit/active/balanced? Before COVID 19 I participated in basketball and track at school so exercising every day became a big part of my routine. While I am not able to participate in ...my regular sports, I still work out for about an hour a day via Youtube. Lilly Sabri has a 14 Day Shred Challenge that I totally recommend because her energy and playlists are amazing. Is there anything new you've incorporated that brings you joy? This is going to sound repetitive, but taking afternoon strolls through my neighborhood is very therapeutic. Daily walks in my community allow me to build stronger bonds with my neighbors while social distancing and even take in some local nature. I take pictures of the cool plants and butterflies I see along the way. Is there anything you've learned about yourself during this pandemic? I’ve learned to be patient with myself. So self-care has definitely become a priority in my daily routine and comes in many forms. Sometimes I watch an episode of my favorite Netflix show before starting homework or bake cookies with my sister. We are under such unfortunate circumstances and everyone is still adjusting to life in quarantine so be gentle with yourself! What would you like to share that might help another Archer athlete who might be having a difficult time? A strategy that you use that's effective. Participate in programs designed to prevent injury Maintain a positive attitude/focus on the things that are in your control Make time to work on mental skills such as focus, goal-setting, relaxation, and visualization. #archerathlete #holdfaststaytrue

The ALC's weekly US feature is Archer student athlete Billi Newmeyer ('21). During this remote time, Billi has been staying active in the mountains. She says, "I've been staying with my family in Colorado for the last few weeks. The ski lifts are not operating, so I've been skinning/hiking up mountains and skiing down. I've continued exercising because I've found that I'm happier and more productive when I get off my computer for at least an hour a day and exercise. Sometimes I workout right after school ends, and other times I like to work out in the evening." Feature by Thea L. ('22) @archerschoolforgirls @archerathletics

The ALC's weekly feature is MS student-athlete Saskia S. ('26) Saskia shares the importance of staying active during this time, "A fundamental reason I have continued exercising throughout quarantine is because I believe it is vital to take care of oneself, and exercising is an essential step in achieving that. While attending school in person, I was a part of both the tennis and swim team, and was continuously provided the opportunity to work out through practices, games, an...d matches. I believe that in quarantine it is just as crucial to continue training and exercising to maintain a perpetually optimistic spirit towards keeping fit and ultimately remaining prepared to return to the court/pool/field whenever that may be. My personal favorite time of day to work out would have to be after school as it helps me feel productive, especially after spending the majority of the day sitting and on Zoom." This week ALC member Thea L. (‘22) is featuring US student Evan B. (‘22)! She shares about the opportunity of variety of sport and the importance of starting her day in motion, I’ve been having a lot of fun trying new workouts like CrossFit and Pilates over quarantine. I didn’t realize how much variety you could get in your fitness without a lot of equipment. In this photo I’m warming up for kickboxing. Boxing and kickboxing are my favorite workouts and I’m so glad that I’ve been able to continue with them over quarantine. I’ve been waking up early and working out before class. ALC’s Middle School feature for the week is Sydney C. (‘25). Sydney is a part of Archer’s Dance Company. She shared the challenges of adapting to a new environment for dance, Dance and Fitness during the pandemic have been very interesting. One day, you go from in-class dance rehearsals at your studio, to dancing in your living room being instructed on a computer screen. Though even with its challenges, dancing and working out from home have taught me many things. They have ...taught me problem-solving, innovation, perseverance, and tolerance for adversity. I enjoy MS Dance Company and NOD Rehearsals, though I took a short break due to Zoom fatigue. With time on my hands, I was able to reconnect with my passions and myself. Additionally, I was able to start regularly working out and to build a fitness routine. Although I would love to be back in the studio, I realize the severity of the pandemic, and I’m happy that I have the option to go virtual. The show will go on! @archerschoolforgirls #archerathletics

She shared her routine during quarantine with ALC member Alejandra C. ('24), "My swim team’s pool shut down in response to the pandemic in March, and I wasn’t able to swim again until June! When I wasn’t in the water, I participated in Zoom dryland workouts (these are very similar to the ones on Archer’s Teambuildr app) with my team to stay in shape. We also focused on the non-physical aspects of swimming, such as mindset, motivation, and goal setting. I am incredibly lucky and grateful that our pool is back open, and I practice there 7-8 times a week for 2 hours. #archerathletics

At the beginning of the quarantine, we did a lot of technical footwork, but we've been moving towards more possession games as a team. At home, I mostly work on passing against a wall and juggling. Playing soccer makes me ...really happy and I'm glad to be back on the field! I also started playing tennis during this time! I practice with my little brother once a week, and it's not that serious for me, but it's still really fun! On graduation day we are featuring senior athlete Sydney Cort. Sydney has been an Archer Equestrian since the 7th grade. She began her career in the Novice division in the Dressage class and steadily moved up to first class in tests 1 and 2. Sydney's curiosity, dedication and love of riding opened up different classes of competition. She transitioned from Dressage, which involves guiding a 1500 lb horse with intricate movements that require strength, precision, and timing, t...o JV Jumpers, which involves soaring over 3'0" high fences at great speed. The trajectory of Sydney's career as an Archer Equestrian led her to Eventing which is the triathlon of the horse world. The event includes dressage, show jumping, and cross country. Sydney shined in all three. She performed the elegance and ballet of Dressage, then rocketed herself and her horse named Ella on a jumper course at breakneck speed, then navigated a cross country course over natural jumps, hills and logs - an extraordinary feat. Her teammates celebrated not only her incredible athleticism and skill, but her influence as a member of the Archer Equestrian team. Amber C.J. says, "Sydney is an amazing rider and team member. She always makes sure the team is celebrating and supporting each other on campus and at events!" Sydney's impact on Archer Equestrian is profound and her presence will be missed, but her team will be rooting for her as she heads to Vassar College this fall. #archerequestrian #pantherpack @archerschoolforgirls See more

Today we are featuring senior athlete Gillian Varnum. Gillian is a 5 year Archer Varsity Beach Volleyball player and during this time helped Archer rise as a program and was integral in the development of the Beach Volleyball family culture that's rooted in teamwork, positivity, and joy. Head Coach Tom Slauterbeck says, "Gillian loves the Beach Volleyball courts. With her enthusiasm and infectious spirit, she became a team leader which strengthened her partners. In addition,... her influence had a profound effect on the success of her team. In the 2019 season, Gillian led her team to the 2nd round of IBVL playoffs, a record for the program. She had a 70% side-out ratio in beach volleyball and voted top 10 players for the Westside Division." Although the 2020 season was brief, her influence was ever present; Gillian's commitment and dedication were honored by her coaches with the team MVP award. The upward trajectory of her career can also be attributed to her willingness. As a dynamic role player, whether it was in training or in games, Gillian was always willing to step up to the challenge. Coach Tom says, "Archer Beach Volleyball's success is directly related to the participation of Gillian, whose spirit and dedication are the cornerstones of the culture at Archer Athletics." In addition to her efforts on the courts, Gillian committed the same focus to her academics. Coach Tom continues, "She is the epitome of what is defined as a student athlete, She finished her academic career with a 4.7 GPA, and earned recognition in the top 0.2% of students nationally for a perfect ACT score. In addition, she is in the top 1% of students as a National Merit commended student. Gillian has truly defined herself as a strong and empowered young woman who has left an indelible mark on Archer Beach Volleyball." Kimberly's presence radiated from the back fence line to home plate. Her teammate Elle C. says, "When I first joined the team this season, Kimberly welcomed me and was kind, caring, and supportive. She was an amazing captain!" Faith S. adds, "I'm so grateful I got to play with Kimberly these past two years. Her leadership this season was amazing. Today we are featuring senior Archer Track athlete Nia Mosby. Nia is a record breaker. A 4 year Varsity Track sprinter in the 200m and 400m, her career follows an upward trajectory, further than any Archer Track sprinter. She holds the record in the 200m with a time of 24.22 and in the 400m with a time of 54.83, both individual PRs. Nia achieved these her junior year when she dropped a full second in both events. Coach Phil Smith says, "This feat would normally take an athlet...e 2 or more years to accomplish, but Nia achieved this in one season." Nia concluded her Archer career as the Division 4 Champion in both the 200 & 400 meter sprints. Her achievements qualified her for the 2019 CIF State championship which was a first In Archer track and field history. Nia finished 7th in the 200m in the state of California. This spring as a senior at her first and only track meet, she surpassed a group of 31 Division 1 sprinters in the 100m at the Oaks Christian Invitational. The indelible mark that Nia has left on Archer Track extends past the individual sprints. As the "heart and soul" of the track team, her example, leadership, and love of competition led her teammates to success in the 4 x 100 relay by setting a new school PR with a time of 48.82. Coach Phil says, "The epitome of a great athlete is one that has a burning desire to compete no matter the circumstances. In the 4 x 400 relay at CIF Prelims, Nia was 30 meters behind in 3rd place when she received the baton and made up the stagger and led her team to 2nd place. The reaction of the crowd brought them to their feet, applauding her effort." Nia is celebrated on the track and in the classroom. She will be attending Princeton University and competing on the Tigers 2020 Track team, the dividends of her hard work. Coach Phil says, "It has been an incredible honor to coach such a dedicated student athlete and present the 2019 Most Valuable Player Award to Nia Mosby." #archertrackandfield #pantherpack @archerschoolforgirls

Today we are featuring senior athlete Siena Mizel. Siena is a 4 year Varsity Archer Softball athlete. She helped lead her team to 3 league championships and 3 CIF playoff runs. Coach Flores shares about her multiple influential roles this season, "For the 2020 season, Siena was the Captain, starting Center-fielder, and a switch hitter who has the amazing capability of batting from the left and right side of the plate. Siena also has incredible speed and because of this, pred...ominantly stepped up as a left-handed slapper this year." Siena's strengths on the field extended far beyond her athleticism and skill. Coach Flores adds, "She was an incredible Archer Softball team captain and leader who led by example on and off the field. Her great attitude, positive energy and passion for the game was contagious." Her teammates describe Siena as someone who cared for her team like an older sister, "She always encouraged, inspired and motivated us not only as athletes but as students." Siena basked in the joy of the sport and being a part of a team. In the margins, before and after practices and games, she and Faith S. would create Tik Toks & Vlogs to celebrate the moments. Her teammates beam with pride when they talk about their captain, "Siena is one-of-a-kind, she is the glue that holds the softball team together!" The joy and excitement she brought to the softball field every day will truly be missed by her teammates & coaching staff! #pantherpack #archersoftball @archerschoolforgirls See more

Today we are featuring senior athlete Karis McCaskill. Karis is a 4-year Varsity swimmer and as Head Coach Steph Ferri says, "Karis is Archer Swimming's resident flyer - butterflyer, that is." The care with which she approached her training and her team shined through on competition days - in her lane and on the pool deck. Karis' strength and determination channeled with every butterfly stroke combined with the strength of her encouraging words at the wall had a profound effe...ct on the team. "Coach Ferri says, "Since freshman year Karis has been someone who leads by example. In those early years, she could be seen carrying and caring for the team's equipment. She would take more than her share of brightly colored mesh bags full of buoys, kickboards, and fins. Karis never complained, not a word." Karis' willingness to show up for her team in times of success and challenge has made all the difference in the success of the Swim program and the team experience. Coach Ferri says,"This year Karis stepped up and brought the team together, and she did this in her way. Her diligence and training continued into our remote training, and she helped lead her team to two top-three victories!" Coach Ferri adds,"Karis, I admire your strength, your work ethic, and your sense of humor. I wish you all the best next year and will miss you." #archerswim #pantherpack @archerschoolforgirls See more

Archer Athletics 19.03.2019

Today we are featuring senior athlete Dylan Marmur. Dylan, an Archer Tennis player since middle school, competed 4 years on the Varsity team and is one of the Fabulous Four. She was the 2019 captain and helped lead her team to an undefeated league championship season and to the 2nd round of CIF playoffs. Dylan's positive impact on Archer Tennis started the moment she stepped onto campus. Head Coach Paula Feigenbaum says, "Even in middle school, Dylan was one of the best amb...assadors to Archer; she always put the team before herself, and ensured that her teammates were great representatives of the school at every match." The family culture of Archer Tennis blossomed with Dylan's attention to the team's connection off the court. Coach Paula continues,"Dylan always hosted team get-togethers at her home because she realized the importance of team chemistry and uniting her teammates. As a leader she took the initiative to create a team experience for all." With a unified squad, Dylan stepped onto the court with confidence and skill. A left-handed singles player, Dylan placed in the Liberty League Tournament and earned 3rd place overall this season. Coach beams, "Dylan loves to compete! And she uses her matches as opportunities to learn and grow as a player." Her wins on the court are celebrated, but it's the grace with which she plays the game that is truly honored. Coach Paula says, "No matter where the ball lands, she carries a positive attitude. Dylan has been an incredible role model for all the incoming players. Her kindness and inclusive nature made all feel welcome and a part of the Archer Tennis family." Dylan's altruistic way extended off the court to her nonprofit Cakes 4 Cancer, a cause that many of her coaches and teammates gave back to. Coach Paula adds,"Dylan possesses a kind soul that will truly be missed by all. We wish her all the best as she heads off to Vanderbilt University this fall." #archertennis #archerathletics #pantherpack @archerschoolforgirls See more

Today we are featuring senior Sophie Larbalestier. Sophie is an Archer multi-sport athlete in soccer and cross country. As a runner, Sophie helped to lead her team to unprecedented results. Cross Country Head Coach Ena Leufroy comments on Sophie's leadership, her fortitude and joy, "Sophie was a great support system for her team this season. She was always the bright smiling face to uplift her teammates after a hard workout or grueling race. Sophie is an example of what worki...ng hard and pushing past challenges to find success looks like. She stepped up during league finals and led her team to the best finish in the program's history." In addition to XC, Sophie is a 4-year starter for Archer Soccer as a center midfielder, a 2-year Captain, 3 x 1st team All League and 2 time Archer team MVP. As the 2020 senior captain she led her team to the CIF Quarterfinals through her extraordinary effort and leadership. In OT in the 2nd round of playoffs vs Tahquitz, absolutely exhausted, she had the vision to send the through ball that helped to advance the team to the Quarters. Head Coach Kim Smith says, "Sophie is an athlete whose energy, indefatigable effort, and enthusiasm raises the level of play of her teammates by helping them drop from their heads into their hearts. In doing so she creates an Archer Soccer experience that is indescribable for her teammates and her coaches." On the field, Sophie's vision, ability to find the back of the net in clutch moments and create scoring opportunities for her teammates is celebrated by all. Coach Smith adds, "It's amazing to see how Sophie deals with pressure. She meets the challenge head on, with her battle paint smeared and moves beyond. Her example reminds her team of their greater purpose - to play with clear eyes and full hearts." Sophie's teammates will continue the tradition of pre-game battle paint as she steps onto her next playing field. Coach Smith adds,"I couldn't be prouder of the person that Sophie is today. I speak for her team when I say 'thank you for all you've given to Archer.' This girl is on fire!" Let's go, #4! #archersoccer #pantherpack @archerschoolforgirls See more

Today we are featuring senior athlete Stella Kraus. Stella is a 4 year Archer Varsity Soccer player. She helped to lead her team to 4 straight league championships and 4 CIF playoff runs with her creativity, vision, and calm, formidable strength. Head Coach Kim Smith says, "What a rewarding journey it has been to see Stella grow into the leader she is today. Every soccer season her voice carried further, her presence more profound, her unique gifts more significant both on an...d off the field." Stella led the juggling circle during pre-game, standing in the middle, serving as the conduit to keeping the ball in the air. This is a great metaphor for her role on Archer Soccer. "Stella sees the spaces, and much like an artist, she uses these spaces to create and connect the individual plays, moving the ball closer to the goal, " says Coach Smith. She further comments on Stella's influence outside the sphere of skill, "In the 2nd round of CIF playoffs this season vs Taquitz, Stella's work ethic, vision and heart helped to advance her team to the CIF Quarterfinals." Coach Smith adds, "Stella embodies our soccer motto, 'Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can't Lose.' When the final whistle would blow, whether it was a pre-season, league or playoff game, I could always see, regardless of the outcome, that Stella had given everything she had to her team and her school." She treated her academics with the same focus and effort as she did her sport. You always knew where Stella was after practice: in the hallway, laptop open, notebook out, and again, using the space to keep the play moving. Coach Smith says, "It has been an absolute privilege to coach Stella these past 4 years. I can't wait to see the positive change she will bring to this world." #archerathletics #archersoccer #pantherpack #cleareyesfullheartscantlose See more

Archer Athletics 26.01.2019

Today we are featuring senior athlete Hannah Katzenstein. Over the past 4 years Hannah has led the Archer Tennis program to what it is today - a league championship, CIF and CIF State powerhouse. Head Coach Paula Feigenbaum says, "Hannah is Archer Tennis. Her leadership and loyalty to the team is immeasurable and has only strengthened throughout the years. She has a spirit and drive that soars. Coach Paula speaks to Hannah's strength as a person and athlete, "After a major i...njury Hannah returned to tennis the following year and won league with doubles partner, Naya Ben-Meir - incredible! On the court, Hannah's mind moves as quickly as her feet. She has the ability to analyze her opponent’s weaknesses and execute the proper shot (you should see her slice) and placement to be successful." In 2017, Hannah played #1 JV singles and had a 15/1 record. In addition to being a top league Doubles pair, Hannah filled in at the Varsity level whenever she was needed. The following season, she thrived as a Varsity player. Coach Paula beams proudly as she speaks about her accomplishments, "Hannah is responsible for leading the team to two years of being undefeated in the Liberty League in Doubles and was named MVP #1 Doubles for two consecutive years - 2018 and 2019. In 2018, Hannah and Naya had a perfect record of 18/0 in league. In the fall of 2019, Hannah and Naya were ahead in the final game vs Buckley - a perfect season - but the game was halted by the Woodley Fire." As Archer Tennis senior captain this season and one of the "Fabulous Four," Hannah competed and advanced to the 2nd round of CIF State in Carpinteria in doubles with Naya Ben-Meir. Coach Paula reflects fondly on the past 5 years, "I feel privileged having coached and known Hannah through her time at Archer. Tulane will be lucky to have Hannah at their school." #archertennis #pantherpack #archerathletics @archerschoolforgirls
