After experiencing the singing of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (OIGC) in Arcata in the wake of the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles in 1992, a group of North Coast community members organized to form what became the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir (AIGC). For 28 years, we have sung mainly Black Gospel music in the spirit of spreading joy and love to the North Coast community. By maintaining a close connection with OIGC, we have attempted to honor the borrowed music and... tradition, and even modeled our mission statement on that of OIGC. We have come to learn that a predominantly white choir directed by predominantly white directors with this mission statement has been an assertion of white privilege. We are aware that AIGC has offended or hurt some members of the Black community by our singing of Black Gospel music, by our actions in some situations and lack of action in others, and for this we are sorry. It has been our intention to promote healing and joy, but intention is insufficient. As a first step, the Board of Directors of AIGC recently changed our mission statement to read, To inspire faith, hope, love, unity and joy through Gospel music. Furthermore, we are choosing to use the pause that the universe has given us as an opportunity for the choir family to reflect and learn, and envision a new way forward.
