Tuesday Tips: Root Intrusions Root intrusions happen when trees are either not planted correctly or not cared for properly. We define root intrusion as the invasion of roots into soil, gravel, or hardscapes where they are not intended to grow. This could be roots growing at the surface that lift sidewalks or curbs, roots growing underneath paving or concrete the grow so close to the surface that the pavement is lifted, or even roots that grow into foundations that cause them ...to crack. The main factors that encourage root intrusions include: trees that are planted too close to a building or hardscape area, improper watering especially surface watering, hardpan soil or base material under the tree, or trees planted in planters that are too small. The other implied factor here is having the right tree in the right location to begin with. A small tree in a small planter bed will be more successful than a large shade tree in a small planter bed. Tuesday Tips: Bark Beetles One of the smaller insects we encounter is one of the more deadly ones in the urban forest. Commonly called bark beetles, these are a diverse group of wood boring insects over 6,000 species are known, but about 20 are causing significant problems in California. Bark beetles most commonly attack pine trees and other conifers, but there are species that attack oak trees, elms and certain fruit and nut tree. They typically do damage by boring into th...e living layer of the tree the cambium where the young feed on the water and food conduction tissue. The damage is done when the young larva feed in the living tissue under the bark and disrupt the flow of water and nutrients. When this continues, eventually there is no ability of the tree to move water up and down the trunk and the tree dies. One of the most important preventative measures we can take is to keep trees adequately watered. Tuesday Tips: Keeping Oaks Healthy Oaks trees are such a critically import tree in the landscapes of California and the west. When developing new areas, mature oaks are usually protected from removal and thus developed around, leaving a mature tree in a disturbed landscape. If not treated properly, they often decline in health and beauty. This shows up in increasing problems with insects and diseases that further weaken them. Without a good long-term plan for recovery and pro...tection, we will lose these beautiful trees. Low rainfall years like this year predispose oaks to more stress, as they did not get the required moisture they need in the winter months. Some, like the blue oak, tend to drop their leaves early. With live oak trees either the coast live oak or the interior live oak we often see lots of leaf drop or leaves on the trees that turn brown. Often time aphids will attack them and pit scale or other less obvious insects start to affect the health of oaks. Tuesday Tips: Canary Island Date Palm One of the classic palm trees in the California landscape is the Canary Island Date Palm. It is one of the largest palms we normally see, it grows to a height of 60’ and the large fronds often spread as far as 20’ across. However, as stunning and seemingly hardy as this beautiful palm is, it is not without its weaknesses. There are several diseases that are becoming widespread among Canary Island Date Palms that are somewhat problematic t...o control. More and more of these palms seem to be declining and, if not treated properly, often succumb to one or more of these diseases. The cost to replace one of these palms easily runs into the thousands of dollars, so it is important to take care of them. Keeping palms healthy and protected is the goal of our Arborists at Arborwell. We have developed a wellness program that incorporates all of the needs and protection your Date palms need to thrive for years to come. If you are concerned about your Canary Island Date Palms, reach out and ask us for a plan to protect them today. * Phone: 888.969.8733 Online: Arborwell.com #arborwell #treecare #tuesdaytips #ISA #arborist #employeeowned #palm #canaryislanddatepalm #summer #planthealthcare #ISA #dryweather #treetips #california #washington See more

Tuesday Tips: Whiteflies During the hot summer months, whiteflies tend to increase on certain trees and plants. This year, we are seeing more and more infestations on several tree types. Whiteflies are small and narrow and the adults have tiny wings and, of course, are whitish in color. They are related to aphids and scale insects, but are more mobile. They feed on the underside of leaves and cause wilting and stunted growth. Whiteflies are capable of rapid reproduction in th...e summer heat, often making a small problem bad very fast. They congregate on the undersides of leaves and swarm in clouds when the infested plant is disturbed. There are many species of whiteflies, feeding on more than 500 species of host plants including many ornamental and fruiting trees. Common tree hosts include ash, avocado, chinaberry, citrus, fig, fringe tree, mulberry, privet and various palms. Damage to edible and ornamental plants is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide. Matt Dickinson has been working at Arborwell for the past 14 years. He is one of the kindest, most giving people at Arborwell. Matt, his wife, and children lived in Boulder Creek, where the Santa Cruz fire has been raging out of control. Last Friday, Matt and his family were forced to evacuate. Unfortunately, this past weekend Matt was notified his home was destroyed along with all of his family's belongings. We, at Arborwell, can’t imagine what Matt’s family is going through after losing everything. We are asking for monetary donations of any size to help Matt and his family rebuild what they've lost. Follow the link below to be taken to the GoFundMe page that has been set up. Thank you in advance for your help. https://www.gofundme.com/f/lost-everything-from-the-czu-fir

Tuesday Tips: Redwood Branch Canker Redwoods are a favorite tree throughout many parts of California. Mature, healthy redwoods create great shade and hold their dark green color all year. They tend to be the tallest trees in the landscape. Redwoods love a coastal environment where there is abundant fog and mist throughout the year. When growing in this environment, they naturally receive a significant amount of the water needs directly from fog in the air. In drier climates, ...redwoods need plenty of water in both the summer and winter. Although they survive with longer periods of dry weather, they will become stressed and less healthy and thus subject to more insect and disease issues. When a tree like a redwood is stressed, it is more subject to disease development. Branch canker is one of those diseases, and is becoming much more common in redwoods, and cause branch dieback, reddish or amber dripping sap, leaf scorch and sometimes damage to the bark itself. Left untreated, it will continue to expand in the tree until the tree eventually succumbs. Tuesday Tips: Hot Weather Watering Hot, dry weather means that keeping hydrated is crucial. While this is true for us, it is even more crucial for trees and plants. Coming off a mostly dry winter, trees have become increasingly more stressed. Extended hot temperature like we are seeing now add tremendously to that stress, so the importance of good summer watering could not be higher. Remember that our urban trees are still, for the most part, recovering from the extended dro...ught of the late 2010’s. It takes at least one good rainfall season in a year without additional stresses for every drought year for a tree to recover naturally. When trees are stressed, they aren’t able to produce all of the auxins and compounds they usually produce to fight insects and diseases. Tuesday Tips: Leaf Scab Leaf scab diseases are a type of fungal infection that affect the leaves of apple, hawthorn and crabapple trees primarily. There is more than one fungal organism that creates this disease, but how they attack a tree and the treatments for them are very similar, so we will simplify the discussion by calling them leaf scab diseases. Outbreaks are more severe after a wet, cool Spring. The fungus develops in the early Spring after spores are produced and d...istributed by wind and rain. These spores infect newly forming leaves causing small brownish-green lesions on the young leaves. Once established on the new leaves, new spores are form and the process is repeated. As the disease develops on the leaves, the infected areas change colors and spread, until most of the leaf is affected and it falls off. Fruit can be affected too and even flowers may show symptoms. The fruit will become deformed and fall off prematurely. Tuesday Tips: Sycamore Scale When sycamore trees fail to thrive, we often look at leaf diseases like anthracnose and powdery mildew as the major culprits. While these diseases are easy to spot, there is an insect that is much harder to see that often times contributes to sycamore problems. Sycamore scale is a small (1/16) scale insect that feeds mostly on leaf tissue. This reduces the vigor and overall health of the tree. When sycamores are weaker they tend to get leaf disea...ses more often, which continues the downhill spiral of tree health. These tiny scale insects overwinter on the bark and in the duff below the tree, then move to the leaves during the early spring. As they establish on the leaves they begin feeding and reducing the ability of the tree to produce and store energy in the form of sugars. When they are quite established, you can often see little pinpricks on the leaves as you look through the canopy. Left untreated, the tree will slowly begin to decline.
