"In 1998 we dropped the word snowboards from the Brand identy, and officially launched our skateboard line. That first offering included, what we called at that time, a 41" cruiser and a 45" carver. Both skates were made with sustainably harvested Hardrock Maple and Hawaiian Koa. Those first boards had koa tops & bottoms, and were reinforced with a layer of environmentally friendly hemp cloth. The hemp worked with wood glue, like fiberglass does with resin, to strenghthen th...e boards. This allowed us to make them lighter and more flexy. Here's the first catalog layout for Arbor Skateboards. The shot of Kenny Perkins pushing barefoot blows my mind... I thew in the Hemp logo. We thought a tree was safer than a hemp leaf. In 1995, two friends would launch Arbor to make environmental conservation the guiding principle in the production of their snowboard and skateboard products. Arbor would become the first action sports brand founded to focus on sustainability, and formally commit to donating a portion of sales to the conservation of the environment. The story of how Arbor got from this idealistic start, to the Brand we are today, has never been told. Now, at our 25-year Anniversary, we will ...be releasing a new documentary, Crossing the Grain. The film is an account of how Arbor’s founders launched the company, into an extremely crowded mid-90’s market, as outsiders with a purpose; through its struggles to find acceptance and success, as the industry consolidated in the early 2000s; to building a unique, collective path forward; to eventually earning a place as one of today's the most innovative and enduring snowboard and skateboard brands. We launched Arbor with our Snowboard line. But the plan was to offer both Snowboards and Skateboards. We were already prototyping skates by late '95. Our first decks were made from reclaimed, 'blem' Arbor Snowboards, which were not in short supply as we worked out the kinks on our wood tops. Those first boards were fun for late night bombs, but not much more. By '97 we were prototyping hardrock maple decks that we had reinforced with hemp. I remember thinking that was pretty... cool. The designs had Hawaiian Koa wood tops and bottoms. We ended up bringing in some of our snow team to test the line. The first shot is Jason Schutz at the Bozeman Skatepark. I also threw in a few shots of our first maple prototype, which Ken Perkins put through the paces in Crested Butte. We would go on to launch the line in '98. Our first snowboards and skateboards were all made with sustainable Hawaiian Koa. Those early Koa tops kind of became a calling card for the Brand. Our original Koa came from a restoration project on Maui, where downed / windfall trees were removed by helicopter, and sold to fund the effort. Back then we would get personally involved to ensure the removal was done in an environmentally friendly way. That’s Co-Founder Chris Jensen (left) harvesting sustainable Koa back in '95.
