Joshua, from Tottenham in England, is a child prodigy. Now 13, when he only six was admitted to the specialist program created by Oxford for gifted children bet...ween the ages of eight and 18. Despite the fact that he was two years too young, Joshua’s father, Knox Daniel, wrote to the university in the hopes of gaining admission for his son. Luckily, they accepted Joshua, making him their youngest ever student. Joshua Beckford has high functioning autism and has demonstrated superior intelligence and an ability to learn from the time he was only a baby. At 10 months old, his father noticed that he could identify numbers and letters on a keyboard and commit them to memory. I started telling [Joshua] what the letters on the keyboard were and I realized that he was remembering and could understand. So, if I told him to point to a letter, he could do it Then we moved on to colors, Knox recalled. Joshua took certificate courses in both history and philosophy and passed with distinction. He hopes to become a doctor when he gets older and says he hopes to change the world with his work. Yesterday marked the beginning of National Childhood Injury Prevention Week, a week that aims to inform parents and child caregivers of the simple steps to take to ensure their children stay safe. Keep children safe with simple steps from from The American Society for the Positive Care of Children: 1 See that children wear safety helmets when bicycling. Check for fit and wear over time. 2 If they play sports, see that they wear appropriate safety gear. Make sure they u...nderstand the importance of using the gear properly and follow the coaches instructions. 3 Enroll your children in swimming lessons. No age is too young or too old. Local YMCAs and youth centers provide swimming lessons for all age groups. 4 Store medicine out of reach of children. Keep in mind a child’s ability to climb. Locks on cabinets will help keep medications secure, too. 5 In your car, see that they are secure in the proper booster or car seat. If you are uncertain, local fire and police departments will check for correct installation.
