How to watch the Orionid meteor shower: If you missed last night’s peak of the Orionid meteor shower, don’t despair! The Orionid meteor shower will be active through Nov. 7 this year, and you should be able to see near peak activity of about 20 meteors per hour for the next few days. Best viewing is after midnight, and for tonight and tomorrow that means moonless nights after the crescent moon sets over the San Ysidros! Enjoy the dark skies and cooler weather!... Much earthly unrest with a series of earthquakes over magnitude 2.5 continuing into the evening tonight with epicenter ~50 miles away from Borrego Springs near Westmorland (on the southeastern edge of the Salton Sea)! The swarm is occurring on the Brawley Seismic Zone, connecting the Imperial Fault with the San Andreas fault. The biggest one in today’s series (magnitude 4.9) could barely be felt by ABF staff near Park Headquarters. Did any of you feel it?

Happy Fall! Cooler days and nights ahead, desert season not too far off! Remember to check weather forecast as well as Park road conditions before heading out, practice basic desert safety and let folks know where you’re headed! Bring extra water and self rescue gear, travel with a second vehicle whenever possible, anticipate that you’ll likely won’t have cell reception. This year, almost all dirt roads in the Park require 4WD, even traveling out to Fonts Point (very deep sand in places)! Enjoy the cooler days and nights ahead! Photo credit: Ursula Esser

Happy Fall Equinox and beginning of fall! Our desert season just around the corner now! Although daytime temperatures are still expected to top 100 F for most of this week, the nighttime temperatures and early morning hours have been considerably cooler with temperatures in the low seventies, expected to further drop later in the week! Air quality has been mostly in the good to moderate range (AQI 50-60) with less haze from the nearby Valley Fire (now contained) and more di...stant El Dorado Fire that is over 60% contained. This is all good news if you enjoy dark night sky viewing, particularly with a waxing crescent moon (still setting well before midnight). Wishing you all cooler days ahead and best wishes for a great beginning of fall! Photo credit: Ernie Cowan
