Congratulations to Najee Harris on receiving the 2020 Doak Walker award as the nations best running back in college football. Since 1990, the nation’s top running back in college football has been awarded the Doak Walker award. Past recipients are now among the National Football League’s greatest running backs. In the 1990s it was Garrison Hearst, and Eddie George; in the 2000s LaDainian Tomlinson, and in 2015 Derrick Henry. Last July, the latest crop of 75 candidates was ...announced from college teams from around the nation. Among this select group to be honored for this prestigious award was Alabama senior and 2017 Antioch High School grad, Najee Harris. After having a stellar first half to the season, Najee made the second cut in November and was recognized as one of the nation’s top ten running backs. By the time the Doak Walker Selection Committee met in December, Najee had rewritten Alabama’s career touchdown (44) and rushing yardage records (3,764) and was a favorite pick of the final three. Congratulations once again Najee you make us all proud! #antioch #eastbay

Since 1935 the Heisman Trophy, under another name has been awarded to college football’s top player. In that 85 year time period, Antioch High School has produced two contenders for this coveted award. The first Panther to reach the Heisman Trophy ballot was AHS ‘71 quarterback Gary Sheide. In his senior year as an All-American at Brigham Young University, Gary threw for 2,174 yards and 23 touchdowns. He earned Conference MVP honors; captained BYU to its first ever Fiesta Bo...wl; was awarded the Sammy Baugh trophy as the nation’s Best Passer; named to the All-Conference Academic Team; was UPI Second Team All-America and eighth in balloting for the Heisman Trophy. His BYU career totals: 4,524 yards and 45 touchdowns. It would be over 45 Panther football seasons before 2017 grad, Najee Harris as a Running Back at Alabama would make college football’s most prestigious ballot and place fifth overall. Harris isn’t lacking for recognition as he was recently selected as an AP First Team All American at Running Back and is a finalist and a favorite for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back. One of college football’s oldest rivalry’s, the Army-Navy game will be played for the 121st time tomorrow. As far as we know, no one from the River City will be suiting up in Midshipmen navy blue or the Army Knight black. But there was someone once, and there have been a few others since then. This November 30, 1953 story clipped out below from the Antioch Ledger is about the 1953 game, where 1950’s Antioch High grad, Jack Garrow, the Uncle of the now deceased Ralph Garrow, was inserted at halfback for Navy in the fourth quarter as a last attempt to prevent a shutout and how he shined. We love hearing about our graduates. Here is a quick update of some currently playing college football. If there are others, let us know. (Spe...cial thanks to Mitch Stephens of MaxPreps for this! ) DeJUAN BUTLER: (Class of 2020; Cal): The 5-11, 205-pound freshman cornerback has yet to play in a game this season for the Bears and likely will redshirt. Coach Justin Wilcox said of Butler: "DeJuan is a smooth, versatile defensive back who we are excited about. The Antioch coaches moved him all around the field and put him anywhere they thought he could make an impact. He’s a tough kid who will come downhill and tackle well. It’s important to keep players like DeJuan home in the area and we are excited we did. ISAIAH DUNN (Class of 2017; Oregon State): The 6-foot, 193-pound senior defensive back has had a superb career for the Beavers with 111 career tackles, 16 pass deflections and a forced fumble in 31 games. Through five games this season, he had nine tackles and a pass deflection. NAJEE HARRIS (Class of 2017; Alabama): A front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, the 6-foot-2, 229-pound running back stayed for his senior season for the No. 1 team in college football and the decision has proven to be a great one. Through nine games (all wins), Najee has rushed 169 times for 1,038 yards (fourth in the nation) and 20 touchdowns (first). His career totals of 3,415 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns are approaching Alabama team records of 3,591 (Derrick Henry) and 42 (Henry and Mark Ingram). Clearly, Najee has made an indelible mark on one of college football's most storied programs. KYLE JARVIS (Class of 2015; New Mexico): The 6-foot-4, 231-pound senior tight end is in his second season for the Lobos and through six games has three catches for 43 yards.

Just amazing: In the history of Alabama football- over 125 years- no player has more rushing touchdowns than Najee Harris. Najee’s first TD in tonight’s SEC Cha...mpionship game was his 43rd career rushing TD, breaking the record of 42 previously owned by Derrick Henry and Mark Ingram. And that's not all! Najee has now scored 51 total touchdowns (rushing and receiving), making him #1 on the all-time Alabama touchdown list. Najee has more rushing TD’s than any player in Alabama football history. Najee has more total TD's than any player in Alabama football history. Think about that. Picture from UA Athletics

Najee Harris and #1 Bama (9-0) rolled over the 2019 NCAA National Champion LSU Tigers (3-5), 55-17 tonight. Once again Najee proved himself as the premier Running Back in college football with 145 yds on 21 carries and added three more TD’s to his NCAA leading 20. Add Najee’s big night to his total career yards and he hurdles up two spots to fourth place on Alabama’s all-time leaderboard with 3,415 total yards. His 20 single season TD’s, places him third on the leaderboard,... and his 40 career TD’s places him at fourth and one TD behind 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander of the Seattle Seahawks. To move to the top of the all-time Alabama career rushing leaderboard, the MaxPreps California All-Decades Team recipient needs 177 yards by his final game of wearing crimson at Alabama. With one last SEC game left and at least one playoff game, and if he stays healthy, it’s a possibility. If he does move to the top of leadership board, Najee will indeed find himself in rare company by surpassing 2015 Heisman Trophy winner and current All-Pro Derick Henry.
