Looking for some competitive tennis, here you go!

Antelope Community Tennis Assoc. 08.02.2021

The courts are too wet to play this morning. Maybe give it a couple hours or this afternoon if the sun is out.

We made it to 2021! I'm sure that most of us are hoping that things will return to normal soon. We have renewed our USTA/CTA membership and have been actively discussing opening options with the park district so that we'll be ready to go once we get the approval. That said, there are a few key updates that concern ACTA: 1. First and foremost the current state and park directives have not changed and our programs are still on hold.... 2. The USTA has developed "Safe Play" guidelines for return to play when allowed. I expect the USTA will update these guidelines as the vaccine is more widely available. I also expect the park district will want to follow similar guidelines once adult sports is allowed. UTR tournaments are starting to be more available at private clubs. Some of our players have participated in this venue. I know that many of us are continuing to play the game we love regardless of the current state of affairs. Many people play weekend morning and weekday evenings. I remind everyone to take whatever precautions that you find necessary and to respect other players concerns. Also please remember to pick up you trash and to keep the courts in good order. That said, feel free to reply to me or the park district if you see any unsafe equipment. We'll work to get it fixed ASAP. If you are a USTA member then you probably get Tennis magazine. My favorite column is Rebel Good's "Court of Appeals". I looked up a previous column that mentions players calling balls out before the bounce. He indicates that there is no "rule" against an early call, but rule#12 states that a reversal must come immediately on any missed call. He also states that the other player/team can call a hinderance if the early calls impeded their ability to play points. I recommend playing as you would like being played. :) See you on the courts. Does anyone think will be able to play tennis today?

It's Thanksgiving and we have much to be thankful for and lots that could be better. Along those lines, I wish there was more promising news but the state of tennis affairs is about the same as last month. The USTA and SATA have not created any 2021 plans, nor have the governmental or health directives shown any improvement. In fact many California counties have increased their oversight rules. Let's hope for better news sooner than later. Even though we are not having prog...rams it's important to be good players and park patrons. Please remember to pickup you trash and to keep the courts in good order. That said, feel free to reply to me or the park district if you see any unsafe equipment. We'll work to get it fixed ASAP. You've probably noticed that the trailer is gone. Unfortunately there was several graffiti events and complaints recently. The park district felt it best to have it removed and rectify the situation. When we get back to normal we can restart our discussions with the park district on upgrades and other facility improvements. If you are a USTA member then you probably get Tennis magazine. My favorite column is Rebel Good's "Court of Appeals". This month he commented that ambidextrous opponents may hit with either hand during serves or any other short. Who does that remind us of? Looking forward, what do you want for Christmas? A new racket, workout clothes or just a chance to play. (I ask for a case of tennis balls every year). Whatever it is we hope you'll share your holidays with us on the courts. See you on the courts. Mark Stotlar President ACTA

Today was a bit disappointing in that we would have had our annual Labor Day event today. I miss seeing everyone on the courts and having fun. I also miss all the people who volunteer and took time away form their holiday to make our events successful. Happy Labor Day and here's to better times!

Please wish a Happy Birthday to long time ACTA mentor and supporter, Sue Davis of Phoenix AZ! Sue served as the USTA NorCal Community Tennis representative in Sacramento area and was instrumental in helping ACTA with its Junior Tennis programs in its early developmental days!

We got notification that the USTA and SATA have followed our lead and suspended all activities through the end of the year. Their statements site a lack of direction and from governmental and health authorities. While I agree with their reasons I was hoping that our national partner would take the lead in showing how tennis is not unsafe in these trying times. If you are a USTA member then you probably get Tennis magazine. My favorite column is Rebel Good's "Court of Appeals...". This month he reminds us that any touching of the line during the service motion and before the ball is struck is a foot fault. Does this sound like anyone you know? Just because we aren't playing organized events doesn't mean you can be organized. Organize a weekly match or two. Organize your bag, get rid of that banana from last summer. Get some new strings, contact Rod Mene, Charles Luke or Travis Perrin for help. Let us know what ideas you have that could make this period less difficult. We're all ears!
