Are you in the mood for some rest, relaxation and recovery? Elephant seals are! They aren’t just really big fans of naps; they are actually conserving energy to get ready for the next long migration. Giving them space helps them rest and recharge. Elephant seals rely on this energy store to survive. Remember to keep your distance plzzz.... so they can get their zzzz’s. .... #winterwildlifewonders #elephantseals #helpmestaywild #tuesdaytips #getsomezzzs @hearstsansimeonstatepark @pointreyesnps @themarinemammalcenter @friendsoftheelephantseal See more

You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? Well, I’m the only one here Elephant seal males protect their territory and harems by intimidating and challenging other males with their bellowing calls. Researchers have decoded the calls to show that male seals remember the vocalizations of past rivals. Seals will use this information to make the decision to retreat or FIGHT! #WinterWildlifeWonders #ElephantSeal #HelpMeStayWild... #SayMyName @hearstsansimeonsp @anonuevosp @PointReyesNPS @friendsoftheelephantseal @themarinemammalcenter Photo: Año Nuevo State Park See more

With ICU capacity below 15% for the Bay Area Region, state campgrounds within this region continue to be temporarily closed in accordance with the Regional Stay at Home Order. Affected reservation holders will be contacted by ReserveCalifornia via email and provided with a refund. Thanks for your understanding as we protect you and our employees from exposure to #COVID19. ICUs are filling up and we need to do our part to prevent California from experiencing a surge on top of a surge. #StopTheSurge

Tuesday tip: A safe pet is a happy pet. That’s one of the reasons that pets are not allowed at Año Nuevo. Elephant seals may look like peaceful chonkers, but they can move faster than you think. Also, they have very large teeth and will bite. They are wild animals! Keep your pets safe by visiting pet friendly beaches and keeping your pets on a leash especially when wildlife is near. #winterwildlifewonders #elephantseals #helpmestaywild #tuesdaytips #barkranger #respect...wildlife . . @hearstsansimeonstatepark @pointreyesnps @friendsoftheelephantseal @themarinemammalcenter See more

Message from Año Nuevo State Park: The pandemic has caused us to close our preserve to visitors this year. But that does not mean that this winter will be devoid of Elephant seal love at Año Nuevo State Park. We will be bringing the seals into your homes this winter. 2021 will (hopefully) be our comeback year! What’s your favorite comeback story? How about that of the northern elephant seal? Around 150 years ago, elephant seals were hunted to near extinction, as people harvested their blubber for oil. Their population ran thin; there were only a handful of seals left in the world. After the Mexican and United States governments enforced their protection, the elephant seal population skyrocketed. Now, there are an estimated 230,000, and it... continues to grow each year! Sometimes simple protections are all that are needed to make huge strides in the conservation of a species. QUIZ: Do you know where the last remaining colony was in the 1800s? Comment below! Hint: It’s an island! #WinterWildlifeWonders #ElephantSeal #HelpMeStayWild @hearstsansimeonsp @anonuevosp @PointReyesNPS @friendsoftheelephantseal @themarinemammalcenter Photo: CMSF Katelyn Sprofera
