TODAY IN IP HISTOY * June 4, 1963 - 6-year old, Robert Patch became the youngest patent registrant when U.S. Patent 3,091,888 issued for his toy truck design. "I took some shoe boxes," Patch said, "and some bottle caps and nails, and was making a truck." The toy, outlined in these drawings for the application he filed at the age of FIVE, could easily be taken apart and put back together by just about any kid. In addition, it was possible to separate the toy into a chassis, a... driver’s cab, truck body, wheels, and four axles in such a way that it could be converted to resemble different types of vehicles including a closed van body, a flat bed or a dump truck. His father, a patent attorney, recognized that his son's design had enough unique elements to warrant registration. "At the time I had to sign the patent application, I couldn't write my name," said the younger Patch. "So I signed it with an X." [Ed. TODAY IN IP HISTOY * (Sound On!) * 1937 - Hormel introduces SPAM after an increased need for non-perishable protein food items. This pork product became a diet staple for troops fighting in World War II. By 2003, Spam was sold in 41 countries on six continents and trademarked in over 100 countries. One reason Spam was sometimes called mystery meat was because people didn’t know the meaning of the acronym. Some theories include a mashup of the words Spiced Ham or Shoulde...rs of Pork and Ham. Others have suggested that SPAM could stand for Something Posing as Meat or Specifically Processed Artificial Meat. In the 1990's the name SPAM also became associated with unsolicited emails or sending the same mail several times for no good reason. Apparently, this was a reference to the Monty Python 'spam, spam, spam' sketch which can be heard during this clip. #trademarks #weprotectimagination #SPAM

TODAY IN IP HISTOY *1852 - Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was first published in Boston, Mass. That year, more than 300,000 copies were sold in the US and 1,500,000 copies were sold in Great Britain. It became the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the the #1 bestseller behind only the Bible. Uncle Tom's Cabin tells the story of a saintly, dignified slave. While being transported to auction in New Orleans, Tom saves the life of a girl, Little Eva, a...nd her father purchases him. Eva and Tom soon become great friends. After she becomes ill, on her deathbed her father agrees to Eva's request that he free all of his slaves. Arranging to do so, he is killed and Tom's new owner, the brutal Simon Legree, has Tom whipped to death after refusing to turn against runaway slaves. Stowe imbued her tale of slavery with Christian overtones as Tom and others endure pointless and brutal suffering at the hands of morally-broken hypocrites. Although Uncle Tom's Cabin is credited as a powerful force leading to the abolition of slavery, modern commentary regarding the story arc and some racial stereotypes depicted have, somewhat overshadowed the historical impact of this massively important work, first published March, 20, 1852. #copyrights #weprotectimagination
