When people tell me they don’t want to be a foster parent because they are scared, I always think of this night. This was one of our little foster children’s ...first night in our home. She had only met us hours earlier. We were complete strangers and she was scared. While we were introducing ourselves, we promised her that she was safe in our home, just as we have done with all our foster children through the years. When it was time for bed she cried & said that she didn’t want any monsters to get her. We didn’t know her whole story yet; we didn’t know if 'monsters' had indeed hurt her at night before. My husband calmed her down, said a goodnight prayer, and asked if she needed anything else before bed. She asked him again to promise no monsters would get her if she fell asleep. He promised, and to put her at ease, this is how they slept. This is a child people are too scared to help? Foster Care is scary, I would be lying if I said I don’t still get nervous sometimes, but I PROMISE you that it’s worth it! You too can help keep monsters away! You CAN do it. Want to be featured? This is important information, because the more we understand, the easier it is to lead with patience and love rather than frustration when our kids act out.
Foster kids are capable of great things!!!! Having a tough beginning does not predispose you in having a tough future. Given the right stability and love, these kids grow ... determination, grit, and can rule the world!!!! See more
Especially during these times when things are uncertain, it is important to recognize when we need help and have tools to prevent parent burnout.
Love always wins!
Struggling will make you stronger!!! Once upon a time, a man found a butterfly that was starting to hatch from its cocoon. He sat down and watched the butterfly for hours as it struggled to force itself through a tiny hole. Then, it suddenly stopped making progress and looked like it was stuck. Therefore, the man decided to help the butterfly out. He took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, although it had a swol...len body and small, shriveled wings. The man thought nothing of it, and he sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to support the butterfly. However, that never happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its life unable to fly, crawling around with small wings and a swollen body. Despite the man’s kind heart, he didn’t understand that the restricting cocoon and the struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small hole were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings to prepare itself for flying once it was free. During these unprecedented times, individuals who have experienced trauma, may especially exhibit lack of control, uncertainty, and feelings of powerlessness. Remember to love.
