Does anyone else feel like they’re in time warp pressure cooker? An observation I’ve made, with all the time I have for self-observation, is that Joy is cultivated not found. In other words, our actions affect the outcome of any experience or interaction.... By practicing mindfulness by being the Observer I have realized that I can choose when on FaceTime with my family or meeting one of my social distance approved friends, if and to what extent joy is involved. (and it better be!) Let me explain a bit more. By taking the seat of the Observer, I have begun to see - with the help of being at a distance - that my reactions in conversation, the level to which I allow anxiety to be a distraction, and extent to which I choose to discuss (or not discuss) triggering topics related to my personal stress and anxieties will impact my ability to experience joy. Regardless of what else is going on in the room or with others. These factors are in my control. I’m still learning. And practicing. Meditation and mindfulness - or the practice of observational awareness - assist in building this mental muscle. It becomes easier to step outside of a situation and observe it more clearly. From that space, there are so many choices available to me that I never realized. My hope and my intention is to come out of this pandemic a better version of myself. Although I’m used to spending time alone, probably too much time alone, it has begun to feel like a bootcamp. Of introspection, of observation. Of evolving and growing. And it’s scary as hell. Sharing should this resonate with you or just be an image you needed to see today. Find your joy - that IS possible today, right now. And get after it. Drop a word or a in the comments if this resonates with you with Love on the journey, Amy (+ Shakti)

One of the key takeaways from my training courses - whether for yoga students, instructors, social workers or school teachers - is to provide a basic understanding of the nervous system so that we can stop fighting against ourselves. There is nothing wrong when our body processes anxiety or depression. Rather, this is a reaction of our autonomic nervous system in an attempt to keep us safe. We each individually and collectively have every right to feel anxious during this u...npredictable time. Learning tools and techniques to self regulate and increase resilience can help mitigate the symptoms of anxiety (and depression). Learn more at an upcoming training or 4 Week Radical Reset course. Throughout the pandemic and most of my challenges over the past several years, I have adopted the approach to just muscle through. If I can stay strong I will make it to the other side. If I do all the work well, then I reward will be waiting for me.... A few big epiphany moments in the past 6 to 9 months have challenged the validity of this approach. First lesson: The suffering (dukha) you are trying to avoid actually *leads to* peace and equanimity. This is a big one I’m still chewing on. As of the past several days, I have still said that I will push through or make it through. (A fight response) But grading student’s papers on the Bhagavad Gita yesterday, 30+ arguments were placed right under my nose appealing to the opposite reality. Those who can find peace in their suffering attain equanimity. To continue to fight or runaway (flight) from the things that scare or trigger us, the pattern inevitably continues. The more we train ourselves to fight back or run away, the more the suffering will persist, knowing it has power. This is grounded both in Yoga tradition and Western psychology + neuroplasticity. So, this morning I am sharing with you a reflection: the end is the start. When I allow myself to not be fearful in the face of fear or suffering, I then begin to have the power - and only then to overcome it. Then, a new chapter can begin. The sentiment was adopted by Gandhi in fighting for India’s sovereignty and civil rights advocates like MLK during the movement of the 1960s. There is no shortage of violence, suffering and difficulty. Only once we choose another way to react will we begin to overcome. If this makes no sense, then you’re doing it right! Read it again and perhaps delve deeper. It’s not too late to register for the 4 week Reset program as an intro to these and other ideas for personal healing. Onward
