While toxins are real, 99% of detox diets, products, and pills are not. In fact, we all have our very own built in detox system: the liver, kidneys and lymphatic system. All work to identify toxins and remove them from the body. Therefore, your best bet for facilitating detox is to live in a way that keeps these inner workings happy and healthy.... Here are some tips for leading a liver-supporting life: 1. Eat your omega-3’s. Foods like salmon, grass fed beef, flax and chia seed are great for preventing fatty liver and improving overall function. 2. Load up on antioxidants and polyphenols. Sources such as raw leafy greens, colorful fruits and vegetables work to improve your body’s ability to handle environmental stressors. 3. Get plenty of cysteine: Cysteine is an essential amino acid that you use to make glutathione, a super-strong antioxidant that binds to toxins and other damaging compounds (like inflammatory free radicals) and prevents them from damaging your cells. Chicken, beef, eggs, bell peppers, broccoli, and oats are all good sources 4. Work out. While the amount of toxins you sweat out during exercise is minimal, physical activity does boost glutathione levels (see #3 for why that’s important!) and pump lymph through your lymphatic system, helping you mobilize and excrete cellular byproducts/waste.
