Oil and water do not mix because they cannot form any chemical bonds with each other. Students in 3rd and 4th grades learned this concept by making a cool lava lamp. A glass bottle is filled with 2/3 oil and 1/3 colored water. After explaining what is alka-seltzer, a tablet is dropped in the mixture. When water and alka-seltzer combine they form carbon dioxide, the gas bubbles rise through the oil carrying colored water with them. When the chemical reaction slows down, the colored water precipitates to the bottom of the bottle. Our students really enjoyed the lava lamp project!

In this project, students will test which fruit contains the most antioxidants. To symbolize cells in our body and make a link between antioxidants and the human body, the students use apple slices and apply different juices (pomegranate, mango, açaí Berry or lemon). After hypothesizing which one will be the best in preventing the oxidation of "cells", the experiment is conducted and careful observations let our students reach the conclusion that lemon worked the best in keeping the apple fresh the longest and, on the other hand, acai juice was the least effective in preventing the oxidation of the apple slices.
