The nation lost another giant of the civil rights movement last night. Congressman John Lewis, a living testimony of non-violence transformed this nation. On behalf of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I want to express my deepest sympathies upon learning of the passing of Congressman Lewis. His civil rights legacy and congressional leadership opened the door of democracy that was closed to the African American community. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is determined to pres...erve his legacy in our continuous commitment to protect the right to vote and fight against injustice and racial bigotry. Congressman Lewis was also thoughtful and committed to fighting for justice. As chairman of the council of presidents for the national Pan-Hellenic council, I have observed Congressman Lewis’ many contributions in time, conscientiousness, and energy to the causes of equality and justice. Our lives today are better because of the many contributions that Congressman Lewis set for us. #Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - introduced January 1, 1863 - is the legislation that granted slaves freedom. However, it was nearly two and a half years later on June 19, 1865 that all enslaved people were notified of their newfound freedom and rights, especially those in the South - particularly Texas. Although this new legislation required pl...antations to begin compensating anyone who worked the land, many former slaves decided to travel elsewhere to find opportunities to maximize their newfound freedom with family and friends. June 19th became a day of celebration for African Americans around the country who gathered to pray, fellowship, and commune with one another to celebrate our freedom.
