Being a Radiation Therapist has meant much change both personally and professionally for me in 2020, said Jim Hart, Lead Radiation Therapist with Alliance Oncology. Starting a new position with a new employer was challenging in itself, but combining it with the COVID-19 pandemic has been nearly overwhelming. I have been lucky to be surrounded by an outstanding Alliance team and great partnership with the hospital. Jim also feels that the #pandemic has also brought more si...gnificance in his role. It is even more important now to show our partners and #patients that we have developed a good plan to keep them safe, from consult to treatment completion, he explained. I always try to lead by example and that has proven to be successful in inspiring those who I lead and interact with every day to follow the current protocols set by the department and hospital. While there have been unexpected challenges, Jim commented that working for Alliance this year has been satisfying. I’ve worked for other health systems before and there always seemed to be a disconnect or a feeling of being an outsider, said Jim. There really is a sense of purpose and belonging with our Alliance team and our hospital partner. I feel like not only am I a representative of Alliance Oncology, part of a good team, and I am doing important work, but I represent both organizations equally. Being a Rad Tech is about so much more than performing scans #patient care is the most important part of the job, said Jennifer Nugent. This year has been full of uncertainty for everyone, she continued. We have adapted new safety guidelines to keep our patients safe while giving them the best care possible. As a PET/CT and nuclear cardiology #technologist, Jennifer comforts patients and answers their questions in a way that they can understand. If I can put my patients at ease during what may be a scary time for them then I have succeeded as a healthcare professional, she remarked. For Tamera Woodbury, being MRI #technologist in 2020 has meant that despite more than 20 years of experience in her field, there are still surprises. I never imagined being called a hero or having my patients be so very thankful for the work that I do, Tamera remarked. I guess when uncertainty is reigning and most of the country is staying home, just getting up and going to work means more than it used toand it meant a lot to the patients that I helped during that time. ...While Tamera said the most obvious challenge this year was getting used to wearing PPE all day, she reflected on a bigger, yet more subtle challenge this year instilling a sense of security in patients. So many people are nervous about having an MRI in the first place, and you add on top of that coming to a hospitaland having to wear a mask inside of the magnetI feel that the biggest challenge is having to ease the fears that go deeper than having their MRI done, she said. It’s been a really strange year, Tamara continued, but I do feel that my work environment hasn’t felt too different. Alliance has done a really great job of trying to give us what we need to do our job, and do it well and safely.
