Hydrotherapy for Dogs Hydrotherapy has been used to treat humans for centuries and the same methods have been formalized to treat equines and canines as well. Doctors began noticing the impact of cold seawater treatment on racehorses, which is still being practiced today. Devices were made that could replicate the benefits of the sea water therapy. Hydrotherapy pools and treadmills were then designed specifically for canine treatment. Although the treatment was spawned from c...old water therapy, these pools are heated to relax the muscles and joints, creating a controlled and comfortable environment for your dog. Jets and inclines can also be added to create resistance and enhance the therapy. There are a variety of conditions that can be treated with hydrotherapy. Most often are conditions related to the spine or joints, but the method can be different depending on what your dog needs. Dogs that are born with congenital conditions can use hydrotherapy to maintain their strength as they grow, and older dogs suffering from arthritis or hip dysplasia can use the therapy to maintain their strength and mobility as well. If your pet is recovering from surgery, hydrotherapy is often recommended to help them heal and build muscle at the same time. The stiffness is taken away from the joints, allowing for an increase in motion and decrease in swelling. Dogs that are overweight tend to have problems with their spine and can also benefit from hydrotherapy because it takes the pressure away from their back and allows them to exercise. The dog will often lose weight while improving the condition of their heart and lungs. Canine hydrotherapy is a great way to help your dog maintain an active lifestyle. Regardless of the condition, the results are the same. Your dog will be in less pain, more active, and a lot happier. Hydrotherapy is available at our sister facility, Zen Den Animal Wellness. Gearing up for Fall- Seasonal changes are bad for everyone and pets are no different. They are as vulnerable as we are and most times, they are unable to communicate that they are sick. So, as a pet owner it is your duty to ensure that your dog does not fall sick during the next seasonal change. Ensure that your dog is well fed, hydrated and is getting the proper nutrients and the right amount of water throughout the day. Keeping your dog hydrated is an important part of pro...tecting him from the seasonal changes. Also, the right type of diet plays an important role in building immunity and having a strong immunity is crucial for protection against diseases. Valley weather can go thru extreme changes from sun-up to sunset. Keep your pets warm during the chill of fall and cool during the hot days. You might think that these are obvious prevention's and you are right but what you don’t know is how powerful these measures are. Many owners who don’t follow these measures end up nursing their sick dog. So, keep the sweaters and shades at hand. Laser Therapy If your pet is feeling pain, has inflammation, or a wound, laser procedures are a pain-free, surgery-free, drug-free treatment. The laser is used to treat a variety of injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions, numerous dermatological problems, & pain. Whether your pet is rehabilitating from trauma or injury, healing from wounds, or simply aging, laser procedures have been shown to provide relief & speed healing. Lasers harness the power of specific ...frequencies of light, utilizing its energy to create changes in your pet’s cells. These changes include increasing the energy levels of the cell and reducing inflammation across the body. The transmission of pain is thus reduced in every cell, meaning your pet receives therapeutic healing. Lasers can be programmed to different frequencies in order to treat various problems and penetrate tissue at the proper strength. Your dog or cat will be laid down on a large mat for treatment. From there, the doctor will use a small, non-invasive device to perform the procedure. You can even lay with your pet, and you will be given protective goggles for your eyes. The laser will be programmed based on your pet’s chronic or acute issue. Most animals seem to enjoy the therapy, as the non-invasive method reduces potential discomfort during the procedure. Many of them even leave the therapy with a replenished level of energy. October Is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and is about getting as many great dogs as possible into the loving homes they deserve. This day was created as a way to raise awareness for thousands of pets that are waiting for (and needing) adoption from the shelters. Animal shelters require year-round assistance. Adoption is a part of the process. Animals come in daily, and the shelters work quickly to ensure the animal’s health and well being so they can be adopted into thei...r forever home. Visit a shelter near you and find your new furry best friend. Visit with the shelter to consider all the needs the dog or cat requires for the long term. If you feel you can’t meet those needs, consider supporting them in another way. Give your time by volunteering. Not only will this help the shelter by providing the animals exercise, companionship and socialization, but it also gives you that wonderful animal love we all so enjoy. Check the shelter’s donation needs list and bring the items you are able to give. This will help the shelter animals find their forever homes more quickly. HOW TO OBSERVE Visit a shelter today and consider adopting. Remember to spay and neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets in the population. Recent studies show we have made progress in this area. Let’s keep up the good work and take good care of these animals who we consider to be family. ****Due to the COVID-19 many local care centers are operating by appointment only. Please see the info below to view adoptable pets and to make an appointment. Step 1: Look at the animals on our website animalcare.lacounty.gov and writing down the ID#s of ones that catch your eye! National Animal Safety and Protection Month October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month and with all of the crazy weather and dangerous fires, this is a great time to review the measures you have in place for your pets and their safety in the event of a natural disaster. The annual celebration was started by the PALS Foundation as a way to observe and promote appropriate ways to protect and care for domestic and wild animals and help people strengthen their skills... for staying safe around animals. Here are some ways you can get involved in National Animal Safety and Protection Month 1. Make certain your pets get their annual veterinarian check-ups and any necessary medical treatments. (Spay and neuter, among them) 2. If your animals are outside, they should be in an enclosed area, safe from predators and so they cannot run away. If you don’t have an enclosed area, keep your pets on leashes. 3. Make sure your pet has a collar, identification tag, or better yet, is microchipped for safety. 4. Don’t feed your pet table scraps; this leads to obesity and many human foods can make your pet ill. 5. Clean your pets bedding regularly. 6. Have plans in place in the event of an evacuation, have go-bags ready for yourselves and your pets. Know where you can go with your pets to ride out a weather emergency. Don’t wait until the last minute to make your arrangements. Talk with friends, family or look for hotels or shelters that will take you and your pets. Make certain, especially in this instance, that your pet is wearing a collar with an identification tag on it. Are you and your pets ready in the event of an emergency? What have you done recently to assure your pets’ safety and protection? EWWW!! PHEW! Is bad breath affecting your relationship with your pet? It may be time to schedule your pets dental cleaning! Dental checks are as important to animals as they are to us and looking after their dental health significantly prevents oral problems they may have in the future. Red gums, stinky breath, or yellow teeth could lead to an oral disease if left untreated, giving your pet a poor quality of life and nobody wants that! ... Brushing That’s right, you can brush your dog or cat’s teeth! But don’t go grab your spare toothbrush and your tube of toothpaste. Human toothpaste could make them sick (after all, they don’t know that they’re supposed to spit it out) and the toothbrush won’t be able to get into the nooks and crannies to really clean their teeth. There is actually toothpaste that is specifically meant for pets as well as brushes that can fit right on your finger. Just ask one of our veterinarians and they’ll be able to point you the right way or provide you with what you need! Although daily brushing is recommended, three to four times a week will do wonders for your friends dental hygiene. Healthy Nutrition While your animal might not be the pickiest eater, they rely on you to provide them with food that is nutritious and good for their overall health, including their teeth. If your pet is already experiencing dental problems, our nutrition experts will be able to provide you with a dental diet that will help significantly. Toys and Treats There are countless toys and treats available these days that are specifically made to help prevent plaque buildup and help with their breath! Make sure you ask your veterinarian which product works best and is the best fit for your cat or dog. Despite loving our pets, we often don’t recognize the signs that they are in discomfort with their teeth. Call us today to schedule your pets annual exam and Dental Cleaning!

The holidays may be over but occasional fireworks still seem to be a occurrence in our area. Fireworks can be terrifying for petscausing many animals to escape their homes or yards and become lost. Veterinary clinics and animal shelters have been receiving record numbers of lost pets since May of 2020. The majority of these list pets do not have collars or microchips. PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE take a few minutes to examine your yard and fencing for escape routes. Even the smalle...st opening can allow a terrified pet to squeeze thru as they try to flee from the noise. Check your gate and be sure there is a lock in place. A frightened dogs constant jumping at the latch can cause the gate to open. Pet parents can help keep their pets safe by following these additional simple guidelines: If there are fireworks in your area, keep your pet in a secure room. Close all windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks, and always provide plenty of food and water. Turning on a radio, television or fan also may help calm your pet. For pets who experience severe anxiety, owners may want to consult their veterinarian about prescribing a mild sedative to ease the pets’ stress. Make sure all pets wear collars with identification tags at all times, even if the pet only lives indoors. The ID tag should include the owner’s current address and phone number. Microchipping is also important, in case pet’s collars or tags are lost. Make sure that your pet's ID tag and microchip information is up-to-date. Keep alcohol away from pets. According to the Pet Poison Helpline, alcohol can be toxic to both dogs and cats resulting in symptoms such as drooling, dry heaves or vomiting, low blood pressure, and possible coma and death. See your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your animal has ingested any kind of alcohol. Never let pets outside during fireworks. Pets can suffer burns, hearing loss and eye damage if they are too close to any explosion. Even having your dog on a leash may not prevent him from escaping during fireworks displays. Distract your nervous pet. If pets exhibit uncharacteristic behavior, such as incessant pacing, crying or whining, owners should help distract them through play or another enjoyable pet activity. Clean up firework debris before letting pets outside. If pets eat the debris, it may cause digestive problems or serious injuries. Owners should contact their veterinarian immediately if their pets have been exposed to any potentially toxic or poisonous substances. Beware of decorations, including streamers, noisemakers, balloons and tinsel. Animals use their mouths to examine strange new objects and it is too easy for them to swallow these items.

Let’s start the new year off right by getting rid of the evidence the extra numbers on the scale! Here are some tips to get your p...et started. Get moving! Trying to get into a fitness habit? Start with something small and sustainable like a 10-minute walk and grow from there. Measure the amount of food. If you still notice weight gain, feed according to your pet’s needs to get the results you want. Eat at the same time. Staying consistent with your pet’s mealtimes keeps them scheduled so they know what to expect. This keeps them from wanting to eat at all times of the day and helps you remember how much they have eaten. Incorporate eating as part of your training. Will work for food. If your dog responds well to treats and food, this is a great time to get their mind working while you manage their food intake. Check your food ingredients. Your dog’s food is not a one size fits all. Every dog responds differently to specific foods. Get clear on what you are feeding your dog and how their body responds to it. Talk to your vet. Halloween can be the spookiest night of the year, but keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be tricky. The ASPCA recommends taking these simple, common sense precautions to keep your pet happy and healthy all the way to November 1. Stash the Treats The candy bowl is for trick-or-treaters, not Scruffy or Fluffy. Several popular Halloween treats are toxic to pets. Chocolate in all formsespecially dark or baking chocolatecan be very dangerous for cats and dogs, and sugar-free ...candies containing the sugar substitute xylitol can cause serious problems in pets. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately. Watch the Decorations and Keep Wires Out of Reach While a carved jack-o-lantern certainly is festive, pets can easily knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire. Curious kittens are especially at risk of getting burned or singed by candle flame. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered relatively nontoxic, but can produce stomach discomfort in pets who nibble on them. Be Careful with Costumes For some pets, wearing a costume may cause undue stress. The ASPCA recommends that you don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it. If you do dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit his or her movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow. Check the costume carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard. Ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury. Be sure to have your pet try on the costume before the big night. If he or she seems distressed or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting your pet wear his or her birthday suit or don a festive bandana instead. Keep Pets Calm and Easily Identifiable Halloween brings a flurry of activity with visitors arriving at the door, and too many strangers can often be scary and stressful for pets. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. While opening the door for guests, be sure that your dog or cat doesn’t dart outside. And always make sure your pet it wearing proper identificationif for any reason he or she does escape, a collar with ID tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver for a lost pet. #petsafety #halloweenpetsafety #veterinarian #veterinaryclinic See more

WINTER POISONS Whether you are home or traveling this holiday season please be aware of these common winter chemicals that can be dangerous for your pets. Chemicals like ice-melting salts, windshield wiper fluids and antifreeze can be deadly for cats and dogs. Methanol and ethylene glycol, the toxic ingredients in windshield wiper fluid and antifreeze, are dangerous to pets; ethylene glycol can cause permanent kidney damage, while ingestion of methanol will usually result i...n lethargy, vomiting and seizures. Pets may be attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze, and their bodies absorb the chemical rapidly. Signs like vomiting and loss of coordination can appear within an hour. If you think your pet has consumed even the smallest amount of antifreeze, please bring him into our hospital immediately. Ice-melting salts can stick to your pet's paws; dogs and cats who walk on streets and sidewalks that have been "de-iced" can suffer from chapped, painful paws. Licking his paws also puts your pet at risk for consuming the chemicals found in ice melts. Look for pet-safe ice-melting products, and wash your pet's feet with a warm cloth after he comes in from outside. See more

Halloween Safety Tips- Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pets. The ASPCA would like to offer some common-sense tips to help you protect them: Don’t leave your pets out in the yard on Halloween: there are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen, even killed pets on this night. Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets: chocolate is poisonous to a lot of animals, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be ha...zardous if swallowed. Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin: pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned. Don’t dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal. If you do dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn’t constricting, annoying or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct his or her vision; even the sweetest dogs can get snappy when they can’t see what’s going on around them. All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog. Be careful your cat or dog doesn’t dart out through an open door. While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the more dangerous goblins and ghouls that this holiday brings. #petsafety #halloweenpetsafety #halloweensafety #happyhalloween #veterinarian#hellofall #halloween #Pethealth #healthypets #veterinary #veterinaryclinic #northridge #csun #vettech #catsofinstagram #pets #petgrooming #Petspa #antelopevalley #canyoncountry #newhall #lancaster #palmdale #acton #aquadulce #rosamond #petsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #welovewhatwedo See more

Such a difference!!! These little ones were in a few days ago and look at them today! Ellie, Cassidy and Razzle are bright eyed, alert and feeling so much better! Tiger and CJ were already little fatties Feral litters are often brought to us in very delicate condition. Thanks to some very dedicated foster families and Veterinarians like Dr Mejia these little ones have an opportunity to live their best life. We are going to love watching them grow! #welovewhatwedo #kittens #kittensofinstagram #bottlebabies #snuggletime #feralkittens #bestlife #veterinaryclinic #veterinarian #healthypets #pets #petsofinstagram #catsofinstagram #cats
