ALL-STAR ADVICE: DIY FRIDGE MAINTENENCE This won't cost anything but some time. If you want to save yourself from costly repair bills or avoild having to buy a new fridge, simply follow these DIY tips for cleaning and maintenence on your fridge! 1. Clean the condeneser coils! Dirty condenser coils cause the fridge to work harder increasing your energy bill and cutting your fridges life by half or sometimes more if you have pets! Cleaning the condenser coils is simple and can... take up to 30 minutes of your time. You will need a broom and vacuum (note: it can get messy the first time). The condenser coils can either be located at the bottom or the back of the fridge. To get to the coils on the bottom simply remove the kick plate or grill of the fridge. To get to the coils in the back move fridge forward away from the wall. Brush dust bunnies with the broom (you can also buy a condenser brush at home depot or local appliance store; it looks like a babies bottle brush but larger) and suck them up with the vaccum. This should be done once every 3 months or once every month if you have pets in the home. 2. Check and clean the gaskets (door seals). The door gaskets (seals) are designed to keep in the cold air. Any cracks or tears to the gaskets (seals) lets hot air in causing the fridge to turn on the motor more often to keep the inside more cold. Again high energy bill, shorter life of the fridge. Avoid this by checking your gasket regurlarly and as your checking for cracks and tears also clean inside the folds. Food being caught in the folds can cause warping. If you do have tears or cracking don't fret the gaskets can be replaced and it's usually inexpensive. 3. Make sure your fridge is level. Yes you will need a level. You can easily download a level app onto your iphone or adroid devices now-a-days which is really awesome! Unlevel fridges cause the doors to not close all the way or not seal how they are intended to, causing the cold air to seep out and forcing the fridge's motor to work harder to maintain the fridge's set temperature. To fix this place the level on top on the fridge and adjust the feet at the bottom of the until it shows it's level. Remember to do this by setting a reminder and watch your energy bill go down. Also read your fridges owner's manual their might be some more tips on there that can be useful.
