MID July tips.. Time to prune cherries and early plums. Cut back canes on berries; remove old growth. Those container plants are trapped in their soil - give them some fertilizer and compost to help with the work that lies ahead. It's a big time of year for pests and disease, so be vigilant and treat in the least toxic ways available. Watch for verticillium and fusarium wilt on tomatoes. Remove plants if infected!

JUNE tip of the day.. This isn't the hottest month of the year, but it does have the highest evapotranspiration rates of the year. Make sure your plants are well hydrated, especially young seedlings. Mulching will help. Thin fruit from trees, and keep roses, carmellias and rhododendrons tidy by removing spent flowers. Check for scale crawlers and treat with horticultural oil.

MAY is here.... Program your water controller to irrigate early in the morning. Give trees a long, deep drink! It's safe to plant tomatoes at the first of the month. Be sure to give them a strong support cage. Plant out the rest of the summer garden and brace for a bountiful season. Trim back ornamental grasses and knock those rose-mucnching aphids off with a blast of water from the hose.

Special tip for the month of April..... This can be a tricky month, as days warm and the rains are fickle. Keep an eye on your soil moisture and water only if needed. Take soil temperature; if it's warm enough for beets, broccolis, corn, cucumbers, lettuces, onions, peas, potatoes, radishes and squash, go ahead and sow those beds. If your Spring - blooming shrubs have finished flowering, it's safe to prune them!
