Golden State Midwifery & Birth Services 06.02.2021

Update: It’s not too late to call and spread the word! We’re hearing the vote may now be later this week. SB 1237 is on to a FINAL VOTE in the Assembly this we...ek! Next it goes to the governor to get signed and become a law. CFAM supports midwife autonomy, but we cannot support this bill. These are some of the reasons CFAM and a growing number of international, national, and California organizations and practices (29 so far) oppose SB 1237: -It is MORE restrictive than AB 1308 and its restrictions on VBAC and any pregnant person that is not low risk will become the STANDARD for all future midwifery legislation. -BIPOC are most affected by the birth restrictions in this bill. -Clinical practice guidelines do not belong in law. It is dangerous and violates birth autonomy. -It fails to actually address the root causes of inequity & injustice in the medical system. -New, invasive data collection solely focused on home birthers and community center birthers do not belong in law and in the current political climate of the medical monopoly on birth, could be easily manipulated to finally shut down community birth. -The new data collection requirements do not allow a consumer option to decline without threatening the midwife’s license (in blue here): https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fac/billNavClient.xhtml -Midwives and pregnant people deserve true midwife autonomy liberated from physician gate keeping. It’s not too late- CALL your Assembly member TODAY or by latest TOMORROW AM. Let them know you're a constituent and leave a message if you need to. THE FINAL VOTE IS TOMORROW (MONDAY) AT 1PM. To find your Assembly member: http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ (Scroll to the bottom of their page for their Sacramento phone number.) We need to let our legislators to hear loud and clear that this is unacceptable to consumers and providers in CA. Please join the growing list of advocacy, consumer, midwifery, and birth worker organizations and practices saying NO to SB 1237, and read some of their powerful critique of SB 1237 in our graphics below: Coalition for Ethical Maternity Care International Cesarean Awareness Network Midwives Alliance of North America California Association of Licensed Midwives Californians for Advancement of Midwifery California Families for Access to Midwives California College of Midwives Birth Rights Solutions VBAC Facts ICOM (East Bay Midwives of Color) The Oakland Better Birth Foundation Better Birth Association of Harlem, NY Nia Healing Center for Birth and Family Life Roots of Labor Birth Collective LGBTQ Perinatal Wellness Center Long Beach Birth Workers of Color Collective Full Moon Family Wellness & Birth Center Welcome Home Community Birth Center Bakersfield Birth Center Golden State Midwifery and Birth Services Birthstream Midwifery Service Big Valley Midwives See Midwives Birthwaves Midwifery Cornerstone Doula Trainings Birthing Without Fear Little Acorn Doula Services Hero Birth Services Urban Village Birth Services Only with a mass mobilization can we stop this bill.
