One year ago, on Sunday, March 8, 2020, we hosted our final public performance with an audience prior to the shutdown - the second concert of Resident Company Glendale Youth Orchestra’s 31st season. We can’t wait to fill our house with the sweet sounds of music and the electric buzz of an audience coming together to create the magic that is a live show experience again #ResidentCompany #Alex95 #AlexTheatre #GlendaleArts #MyGlendale #DTGlendale

There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish. Glendale Arts is an organization led by women who abide by the motivational philosophy behind this statement from Michelle Obama. On this International Women’s Day, we acknowledge that our achievements are an all-team effort but take this moment to salute the women of Glendale Arts, who create ripple effects every single day as they nurture the Alex Theatre ~ the Building, the Business, and Beyond ~ and pump life and r...evenue into our surrounding community one idea, one opportunity, one effort at a time (who are we kidding - we multi-task and get it all done at once!). Now back to work - we have much to accomplish! #InternationalWomensDay #WomensHistoryMonth #FemaleLeadership #MichelleObama #Alex95 #AlexTheatre #GlendaleArts #MyGlendale #DTGlendale

As we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, we reflect on a question the civil rights activist and icon posed to an audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957: Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ This question has perhaps never been more persistent and urgent in our lifetimes, as we’ve witnessed the explosive impact at the intersection of words and actions on several aspects of our lives over the course of the past y...ear. Like the first domino that sets off a chain reaction on the ones lined up after it, each of us is responsible for a chain reaction of events that follows the words we speak and the actions we take, and must therefore ask ourselves how we are contributing to an existence that is more just, more secure, and more peaceful for our fellow human beings. We would love to hear your answers to Dr. King’s question. Tell us in the comments below, What are you doing for others? #MLK #MLKDay #Alex95 #AlexTheatre #GlendaleArts #MyGlendale

The final wishes were hung on the Alex Theatre Wishing Wall on Friday. Our thanks to everyone who shared their greatest desires for a brighter future and turned the Alex gates into a monument of hope at the center of our community. We had wishers of all ages, as young as four; submissions from around the country and across the world, everywhere from our home in Glendale to #NewYork and the #UK; participation from our local partners in the arts - the Glendale Library, Arts & C...ulture and City of Glendale, CA's Arts & Culture Commission, Museum of Neon Art, and Imagine Theatre; and thoughts from our elected leaders Congressman Adam Schiff and State Senator Anthony Portantino as their constituents embark on the New Year. All of us at Glendale Arts hope that these heartfelt wishes for yourselves, your loved ones, and your community are realized and reaffirm our wishes for 2021 to bring health, happiness, safety, and prosperity to everyone. #TagAWish #WishingWall #Alex95 #AlexTheatre #GlendaleArts #MyGlendale

Through his company Comic Cure, he has partne...red with Glendale Arts on a variety of projects, including breaking the world record for the most number of comics in a single show to celebrate the Alex Theatre’s 92nd birthday (answer: 106!) to more recently, last year’s Alex95 telethon and Laugh It Off Comedy Night. We toast Richy in laughter for his birthday today! #HappyBirthday #Alex95 #AlexTheatre #GlendaleArts #MyGlendale

Alex Theatre 12.11.2020

These are unprecedented times for all of us. The Alex Theatre has had to cancel all events through April 30th, while also facing additional cancellations beyond the mandatory closure period. On face value this may not sound devastating, but it has created a tremendous financial burden for Glendale Arts, the non-profit management company of the Alex, with a projected loss of $450,000. We are continuing to work hard behind-the-scenes with our limited resources to remain a resilient voice for hope, healing, and wellness now and as our community of event partners, patrons, and supporters enter recovery, but we need your help now to erase the $450,000 shortfall. Click here to voice your support by making a $25, $50, $100 or more gift today: https://glendalearts.kindful.com/?campaign=1058942.

Peace is not something you wish for. It's something you make, something you do, something you are." -John Lennon More than ever in times of crisis, a unified community has the power to lift its members up. Glendale Arts and the Alex Theatre stand united with the Armenian community of the City of Glendale, CA, Los Angeles, and throughout the world which has galvanized to demonstrate how peace is "something you make, something you do, something you are" in the face of the attacks on Artsakh and Armenia that echo the horrors of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. May the collective efforts of one and all lead to everlasting peace free from persecution and denial of the most fundamental human right of all - to exist. #PeaceForArmenians

Glendale Arts joins glendaleOUT and Alex Theatre Resident Company GMCLA - Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles in supporting our LGBTQIA+ brothers and sisters on every step of their journeys. Aside from its stature as a world-class performing arts and entertainment center, the Alex Theatre is known for its spectacular architecture. Here’s an overview of the most stand-out features of one of the world’s most beautiful Art Deco buildings, as named by The Guardian last year, on #WorldArchitectureDay. The Alexander, as the Theatre was originally known when it opened its doors in 1925, was designed by architects Charles R. Selkirk and Arthur G. Lindley with Greek an...d Egyptian motifs. This type of architecture was romanticized and popularized during this time period as part of the Art Deco movement. Leading into the historic venue's grand lobby is an open-air forecourt. It is rare for a theatre to have an outdoor space like this, and we are thrilled to claim one of the remaining few preserved today. The auditorium was designed as an atmospherium with an open-air illusion enhanced by the stage-set wall encircling the room, creating the feeling of being enclosed in an ancient garden. The Alex is one of the few atmospheric theatres constructed in Southern California and one of only a handful that still remain. Perhaps our most widely-recognized architectural features are our iconic three-dimensional marquee and 100-foot tall neon tower with the spike starburst at the top. Created in 1940 by architect S. Charles Lee, these marvels continue to serve as a beacon for Downtown Glendale, symbolizing the Alex Theatre’s storied history and standing as a premier destination for arts and entertainment in Los Angeles. Glendale Arts and the Alex Theatre are rooted in a community whose Armenian population, the largest outside of Armenia itself, is central to its civic and cultural identity. We stand in solidarity with our Armenian brothers and sisters, neighbors, and collaborators in Glendale and around the world following Azerbaijan’s launch of a large-scale air and artillery attack against the Armenian region of Artsakh over the weekend. With heavy hearts, we mourn the lives that have already been lost and hope for a swift restoration of peace to the area.

One year ago today, we hosted Russian Ballet Theatre’s production of Swan Lake. Through RBT’s partnership with Plus 1, an initiative that connects artists with causes, and DonorsChoose, $1 from each ticket sold went to supporting local public school teachers and their classroom projects. Thanks to the dollars raised throughout the tour, on a national scale: 164 projects were funded... 138 schools were served 156 teachers were supported 11,058 students were impacted One of our local recipients of funding was John Marshall Elementary School here in the Glendale Unified School District. Grades 3-5 Teacher Mrs. Satchyan expressed her gratitude in this heartfelt note: "Thank You So Much for funding this project. Not knowing when we'll be able to re-enter the school building, and once we do know, how much of our instruction will continue to be delivered remotely is why I am so grateful for the funding for this project. These items are needed to enhance instruction during these restrictive times. Your generosity is key to the success of our remote learning. I am so grateful for the support of our donors and volunteers. Thank you for helping us keep our learning strong!" Thank you to the 1,300 patrons who made this possible! #Alex95 #AlexTheatre #GlendaleArts #MyGlendale #GUSD #RBTheatre

Today, as every day, Glendale Arts stands in solidarity with historic theatres and other performance venues across the nation, joining our industry colleagues at League of Historic American Theatres and numerous partner organizations to urge Congress to pass a comprehensive pandemic relief bill that provides a critical lifeline to public gathering venues, which have remained partially or fully dark since the March shutdown, and the millions of professionals who have been unemployed or underemployed as a result. #DoNotAbandonUS #SaveOurStages
