El-Fish is a 1993 software toy developed by the creator of Tetris, published by Maxis of Sim City fame. El-Fish procedurally generates fish, which the user can name, mutate, breed with other fish, and finally, animate in order to house them in a customizable simulated aquarium. The software also features a fractal-based plant generator, with patterns based on aquatic plants like Ludwigia, Sagittaria, Anacharis, etc. It's a stretch to call this a "game." It's clunky, antiquate...d, and feature-poor. It is, however, a fascinating and singular artifact of DOS software. No other game or software comes close to the apparent love for the hobby that the developers had, and it's a genuine feat of engineering. Creating my aquascape yesterday, I was struck by how much it felt like designing a real one. There's so much here that should be carried on for a future aquarium sim.
