Rose are red, violets are blue. Love may be in the air, but scammers are still trying to trick you. The Alameda Police Department is advising the public to use caution when engaging on dating apps or social media sites. ... Law enforcement agencies across the U.S. are seeing unsuspecting individuals fall victim to romance scams. Romance scammers disguise themselves behind fake accounts on dating sites/apps and social media channels in the hopes of striking a relationship with a potential target. The scammers will use the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to groom, manipulate, and/or steal from the victim. To enhance the authenticity, scammers will build relationships and trust with the victim over time talking on the phone or chatting with the victim for days or even weeks on end. As the scammer carries out the ‘relationship,’ they may appear to be genuine, caring, and trustworthy, but in actuality, they are building trust to gain insight into your life, access your personal information, and ultimately take your money. Scammers may ask for money to pay for travel expenses to see you, a medical need, pay off debts or pay fees related to official travel documents. Scammers often ask for money to be wired or loaded onto gift cards. APD would like to provide the public with tips on how to avoid falling victim to a romance scammer: Be careful of what you post online. Scammers may use these details to better understand their target or gain information about personal security questions. Conduct a reverse image search of the individual’s profile picture to see if it matches with another name or other profiles. If you are uncertain, conduct a search of the person’s name, email, phone number, or place of employment to verify the information. Be cautious of individuals who move quickly in the relationship. This includes a person saying ‘I love you’ after a few chats, asking to move in or even a proposal before meeting. Beware if the individual seems too perfect or quickly asks you to leave a dating service or social media site to communicate directly. This is a tactic used to help reduce their chances of being tracked. Use caution if you and the person make multiple plans to meet face-to-face, but they always comes up with excuses on why they can no longer meet. Always ask lots of questions. It is okay to ask the same question days or weeks later to see if their answers stay consistent. Never send money, especially through a wire transfer or gift card, to anyone who you have only communicated with online or by phone.

Police and community members work in unison to take a burglary suspect into custody. Over the weekend, Alameda Patrol officers were advised of a burglary of a business that just occurred in the 1900 block of Park Street. As officers were en route, the witness maintained communication with APD dispatchers and provided a detailed suspect description and direction of flight. This information was broadcasted to all responding units. As Officer McKinley began to approach the sce...ne, the witness signaled that the suspect had fled over the Park Street Bridge. Without hesitation, Officer McKinley crossed the bridge where he located a male subject matching the description provided by the witness. As the investigation continued, Officer McKinley headed back to the business to contact the witness, who remained at the scene. It was determined that the witness was an employee preparing for a delivery. As the employee approached the business, they noticed one of the doors had been smashed in. Not knowing if someone was inside, the employee did not enter the building, pulled out their cell phone, and shouted out into the facilities. After the employee made their presence know, a male subject swiftly emerged from the broken door. The quick-thinking employee took a photo of the man to assist officers in identifying the suspect. APD officers conducted a safety check of the building and found no one else inside. It was later determined that the suspect was wearing stolen merchandise from the business when he was contacted by Officer McKinley and he was likely in the process of attempting to steal an expensive painting before being interrupted by the employee. We would like to take a moment to recognize the diligent community member who, through their efficient communication and thoughtful actions, worked in sync with dispatchers, and Officer McKinley to successfully recover the stolen items and hold the individual responsible accountable for his actions. Bravo all around!

A 27-year-old woman has been identified as the suspect in connection with an Alameda attempted murder, carjacking, and robbery case from October 22, 2020. Immediately following the incident, APD began a full investigation into recovering the stolen vehicle and identifying the suspect. During the follow-up investigation, we learned that the vehicle was located by Oakland Police Department Officers and was occupied by a single female suspect. OPD subsequently arrested the susp...ect for vehicle theft and identified the occupant as Amelia Minjarez. Realizing the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Alameda and was connected to a shooting, OPD contacted APD’s Violent Crimes Unit. APD’s investigation tentatively identified Ms. Minjarez as the shooter in the incident that occurred near Grand Street and Clement Avenue. Last week, APD sought assistance, via our social media channels, for any information that could further assist in the identification and prosecution of the individual involved in the October 22nd carjacking and shooting. As a result of APD’s investigation, along with credible social media leads, we are seeking additional charges against Minjarez for attempted murder, robbery, and carjacking. We want to extend a sincere thanks to the Oakland Police Department and our observant community members for their assistance in this case. The identification of Ms. Minjarez is a direct result of teamwork among law enforcement agencies and the community we serve. As the case progresses through the criminal justice system certain details cannot be released at this time.
