THE HARD FACTS ABOUT RETIREMENT! Most people think that in order to have a reasonable retirement you must have at least $1,000,000.00 in savings such as in a 401(k). That's good but most people who have to take out RMDs (Required Minimum distribution) at the age of 70 and a 1/2 at 4% is only $40,000.00 a year (for 25 years). If Social Security is still around the average is $1700.00 per month. That would be $60,000. a year. Can $60,000.00 a year fulfill your Dream Retirement?... I actually believe that we should be shooting for at least $2.5 Million for a retirement that fulfills your vision. 4% per year of $2.5 million is $100,000.00 per year add $20,000. for Social Security (don't depend on it) that would be $120,000. a year. Does that sound better? Oh, wait I forgot Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam needs his money. for the first figure $40,000.00 at (conservative estimate) 25% you will pay $10,000. in taxes leaving you $30,000. a year plus $20,000. a year from Social Security so it is now $50,000. a year in retirement. If you live in Silicon Valley that my friend is poverty level. In the other illustration, you will be bringing in AFTER TAXES $75,000.00 plus $20,000 from Social Security.
