This week, AHUMC’s 60th Anniversary celebration includes messages from former pastors Rev. Chuck Cordes and Rev. Dale Weatherspoon sharing memories of expanding social justice and neighborhood ministries during their time with us. Pastor Mariellen Yoshino’s sermon continues the exposition of Ephesians 2:19:22, noting that Pastor Chuck and Pastor Dale each provided important puzzle pieces in building up the picture of our current Beloved Community. The Apostle Paul told the ch...urch in Ephesus that despite their current challenges, they were not alone: prophets and apostles had provided the foundations for the Ephesians and now was their time to be fitly framed themselves into the body of Christ. For the beginning of our 60-year Anniversary celebration, former AHUMC pastors Rev. Jane Schlager and Rev. Amy Beth Durward recall their warm welcome into our church family. Pastor Mariellen Yoshino’s sermon highlights our anniversary scripture of Ephesians 2:19-22, reminding us that wherever we come from and however we got here, we are now part of the household with God in a family of faith. Thanks be to the families who six decades ago welcomed God and one another in founding our church, and may it inspire us to reach out to accept, love, and welcome those who may be different from us just as Jesus loved us first. The Bingham family joins from across the country as worship leaders for our Commitment Sunday service, telling the story of their grandmother who was the spiritual force stirring up their family. Pastor Mariellen Yoshino’s sermon recalls the disciple Timothy’s grandmother Lois and reminds us that, just like a loving grandmother, this group we call The Church can stir us up to move in power, love, and self-control. And we learn that family connections can come in unexpected places. The Waltz family begins our audio service this week by sharing the story of a fortunate U-turn and the meaning and memories of AHUMC in their lives. Pastor Mariellen Yoshino’s sermon explores why a prayer of glory to God breaks out in the middle of an epistle, speaking to how the indwelling of Jesus allows us to accomplish more than we think, or ask, or can imagine.
