Luckily there are thousands of free guided meditations out there available through YouTube or apps such as Calm and Headspace! Thoughts on Survivor Day 2020 I’ve been working closely with AFSP since 2014. I’ve chaired several walks, been through loads of training programs and now serve as a board co-chair. 2020 was my first International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. In past years, I had not been available to attend as it always fell on the same day as my kids’ marching band championship days. And since my loss is so long ago, 1985, I didn’t really think it was for me as I have been going to th...Continue reading

Statistically speaking, it’s true. 54% of people in the U.S. have lost someone to suicide, and close to one and a half million people made suicide attempts in 2017, the last year reported. When things feel uncertain or when we don’t feel safe, it’s normal to feel stressed and overwhelmed. For those who already struggle with their mental wellness, we might feel more anxious, depressed or less motivated to carry out our daily activities. While not a substitute for professional care, there are things you can do to reduce stress, encourage wellness, and restore a sense of well-being in the face of uncertainty. You know yourself best. Do what works for you. Here are a few self-care activities to help you take a step back, breathe, and focus on your well-being.

Today is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Whether you're joining a #SurvivorDay event with others in your community or honoring your loved ones privately, you are not alone in your grief. What's one thing you want other suicide loss survivors to know?

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Los Angeles & Central Coast 24.05.2020

Chrissie, an advocate and volunteer, shares her experience at Survivor Day. Suicide loss and grief can be so isolating. To hear the stories of others who have thrived fills me with hope that I can get through this and still have purpose. To cry and share with others in the breakout group session makes me feel understood and less alone. Survivors Day provides the opportunity to connect with others who understand the depth of my pain, as well as the complicated emotions that ...come with suicide loss. And it also allowed me to meet incredible people who have become great friends. It is a day to not only honor your loved one, but to honor your grief, your journey and yourself. Thank you Chrissie for sharing and for being a bright light in our community. Join us tomorrow for our 2020 virtual Survivor Day event.

I still wanted to mark the event and fundraise, but decided to walk alone. I walked 18-19 miles and carried names with me to honor and remember. " Thank you for your inspiring 19 mile walk, we appreciate you!

TOP TEAM ALERT! Congratulations to our #1 Fundraising Team on Experience Day: Kim's Everest Challenge For Every Life! Here's what Kim had to say about her experience: "I took on the Everest Challenge which means I rode my bike up and down one hill repeatedly until I reached the height of Mt. Everest: 29,029 ft. I rode 18.5 hours and 180 miles in one day with the goal of bringing hope to those who are fighting a battle and struggling to find the light. As a suicide attempt survivor, I wanted so much to be able to look in the mirror the day after my ride and know that I did not give up on myself as I had when I tried to take my own life. And when I finished that day, I realized I climbed a mountain...a real one and spiritual one."

SoCal participant, Kelly, shares her inspiring story with us this week! "This year has been challenging in many ways. I've struggled to find calm in this ever-changing environment but slowly but surely I’ve adapted to a new normal and started to thrive again. My one constant through this time was my dog. She gave me purpose and responsibility on the days when I would have gladly stayed inside and shut myself off to the world. Walks around the neighborhood and mornings spent o...n the patio enjoying the sunshine were part of our daily routine. Having her next to me made me feel like I wasn’t going through it alone. I loved it. Recently, I had to say goodbye to my sweet dog. As a pet parent, you know this day will eventually come. I was fortunate to have this special girl in my life for over 12 years and will be forever grateful for the joy she brought to my life. Almost immediately, the impact of her being gone hit me and I found myself alone for the first time in my adult life. Sadness & anxiety flooded me. In the days after she passed, I realized that my feelings were beyond my ability to handle solo. I reached out to my support network of family & close friends and let them know I was struggling. My persona is one of positivity & strength but it was important to let them know that in this moment, I wasn’t feeling strong & needed help to get through. They showed me I wasn’t alone and help me find positivity in each day. Weekly sessions with a therapist not only help me navigate the grief from losing a pet, but also give me the tools to focus on productive activities. This is a team effort and it is a great feeling to know I have people on my side. My mental health is something I work on every day. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it especially during this difficult time. I know these feelings are temporary & a day will come when my heart is healed & I can be open to adopting a new dog. Until then, I will do everything I can to find joy in each day on my own."
