10 a.m. this coming Saturday! See you there.
I'll post a flier when we have one, but early notice, y'all: this year's tour will be on February 22 at 10 a,m, at the Old City Cemetery! We are thrilled to be joined by the Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum, come join us for an exciting and dynamic morning of celebration!
Beverly A. Johnson was born in Washington, D.C., and spent his boyhood as a steward on a steamship on the Potomac River. He came around the horn to California in 1868. Johnson was a railroad porter and caterer, and a prominent member of the Colored Conventions movement. In February 1879 Johnson called a meeting of African-American voters to order, telling them they were tired to death of being mere automata in California politics; they were moving now all over the state, they demanded recognition at the hands of the Republican Party. He believed they ought to exercise political independence, and with a due regard to political success, insist on being recognized." Learn more Saturday!
Can't wait for next year's tour! Enjoy this ad for Dr. Fletcher's foot biz. We have exciting news coming soon...
We had a very successful tour last week! Here is a picture of Sacramento 1915 Negro Giants team, with 3 cemetery "residents" -- Sherman & Harrison Brinson and Frank Whitaker!
