Can't find bread? Try this recipe! Farmhouse Bread Recipe 1 1/2 cups milk, I prefer whole 1/4 cup butter 2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast (or one 1/4 ounce package)... 1/2 cup warm water, around 100F 2 tbsp sugar 1 Tbsp of salt (1/2 Tbsp if you use salted butter) 5 -6 cups flour, maybe a little more butter or shortening, for greasing loaf pans Heat milk and butter over medium heat until butter is melted and milk barely simmers. Let cool to 100F. If you stick your finger in, it should feel warm, not hot; it’ll be barely warmer than your finger. If it’s too hot, you will kill the yeast. If it’s cooler, it’ll be okay. In your mixer bowl, stir together yeast, water, and sugar until yeast is wet. Let stand until the yeast foams up, about 5 minutes. Add the warm milk and salt. Mix until well combined. Add 2 cups of flour and mix. Continue adding 3 more cups of flour about 1/2 cup at a time while mixing. You should have 5 cups of flour added. Mix the dough until it forms a smooth ball that pulls away from the sides. As you mix, add flour a little at a time to keep it from sticking to the sides of the bowl. The dough should not leave a lot of residue on your fingers when you touch it. If it does, add some more flour. Knead for about 2 minutes in a mixer or 8 minutes by hand. Form the dough into a ball with your hands, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. This will take about 2 hours but may go faster if your home is really warm. Uncover the dough, and punch it down. Form it back into a ball, cover it, and let it rise until doubled again. This time, it’ll be about an hour, maybe a little less. On a lightly floured work surface, cut the dough in half. Using one half, pat the dough into a rectangle. Roll it up on the long side, fold the ends underneath and pinch closed. Place in a greased loaf pan. I like to use shortening, but anything works. Repeat with the other half. Cover the pans and let rise until the top of the dough is about level with the top of the loaf pan, about 45-60 minutes. I like to turn on the oven and let the bread rise on the stovetop. Cook the bread in a 375F preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove from pans and cool on a rack. While the loaves are hot, brush the tops with butter to keep them soft. See more
