#BlackHistoryMonth Prior to becoming one of the first African American flight surgeons in the Army and the first in the Air Force, Colonel (Dr.) Vance Marchbanks was no stranger to adversity. Marchbanks attended the University of Arizona where he was segregated due to the color of his skin and often found cockroaches in his food, placed by other students. After graduating, Marchbanks attended Howard University's medical school and later moved to Tuskegee, AL to work in a vet...eran's hospital. In 1941, he began his military career as a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps and later served as the chief flight surgeon for Lt. Col. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. and the Tuskegee Airmen in 1944. Following his career in the Air Force, Marchbanks continued to persevere and joined NASA's Mercury Program to monitor the health of astronaut John Glenn during his solo orbit around Earth. In addition, Marchbanks oversaw the testing of the moon suit and backpack later used in the Apollo missions. Today, we remember his determination and fight for equality in Aerospace.
