During a power plant decommissioning project a boiler steam drum located approximately 50’ above ground level is being hand demoed. Sections of the steam drum are torch cut and drop to the floor below. Each piece of cut metal can weigh over 300 pounds! AEG on this project and many others ensure that safeguards to prevent serious injuries and fatalities are established, maintained and that authorize personnel embrace and comply with safety measures put in place.
KEEPING PERSONNEL SAFE ON A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS DEMOLITION PROJECT Did you know that Demolition work involves many of the hazards associated with construction; therefore, all of 29 CFR Part 1926 Construction Standards apply at a demolition site. However, demolition involves additional hazards due to unknown hazards, which makes demolition work particularly dangerous. For this reason, OSHA created the Subpart T Demolition standards specifically for these operations.... Which demolition standard is the Most Frequently Cited? 1926.850(a) Preparatory operations. This standard accounts for up to three-fourths of the citations on a demolition work site. 1926.850(a)(1), which requires an "engineering survey" to be completed prior to starting demolition, accounts for more than half these preparatory operations citations. Health and Safety Experts in the Demolition Industry AEG’s professional staff are trained and experienced health and safety professionals who have reviewed, conducted, oversee and managed large scale challenging demolition projects. Most if not all demolition or dismantling projects are preceded by hazardous material abatement including but not limited to asbestos containing materials (ACM); paint coatings that may contain heavy metals like lead, chromium, nickel, arsenic, and zinc; mercury containing gauges, switches, lamps; and, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in paint coating, caulking, and a dielectric liquid found in transformers and fluorescent light ballast. Besides the potential of trips, slips and falls especially from heights requiring proper tie-offs and anchor point, struck-by hazards are potentially fatal. That’s why AEG stresses the importance of good communications, cordoning off drop-zones and constantly remaining vigilant to control access especially during hand or mechanical dismantling of structures. You wouldn’t want to be anywhere close to where chunks of steel are being dropped from height weighing hundreds of pounds!
AEG recently completed a campus-wide hazardous building materials survey for NASA/Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) focusing on the presence of asbestos and lead. Destructive testing is typically performed to identify hazardous materials that are abated prior to demolition or building renovation activities. A lot of history was made out at Edwards Air Force Base/AFRC. https://www.google.com/url
