Congress Considers Renewal Of Autism Act by Michelle Diament | February 11, 2019 U.S. Capitol... With the Autism CARES Act set to expire later this year, a bill introduced in Congress would reauthorize the legislation for another five years. (Evan Golub/Zuma Press/TNS) Facebook Twitter Google+ LinkedIn Pinterest Email Lawmakers are looking to secure over $1 billion in the coming years for federal efforts to address the needs of people with autism, including additional support for adults on the spectrum. A bill introduced late last week in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives would reauthorize the nation’s primary autism legislation known as the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education and Support, or Autism CARES, Act. The measure, H.R. 1058, would ensure continued federal support for everything from autism research to prevalence tracking, screening, professional training and other initiatives. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Without action from Congress, the current incarnation of the Autism CARES Act and the $260 million annually associated with it is set to expire Sept. 30. The proposal includes an extra $368 million over the current funding level to renew the law for the next five years. And, it features a greater emphasis on the needs of adults with autism by adding the phrase across the lifespan to several provisions. Our new legislation will reauthorize vital federal research on earlier interventions for children with autism and expands funding for critical research, education, housing and other programs that assist the countless children and adults on the spectrum, and their families, said Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., who introduced the House version with Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Pa. The bill will also help ensure that the estimated 50,000 persons with autism each year who ‘age out’ of critical assistance programs and enter adulthood are supported, as many individuals and communities are unprepared for this transition. In addition to continued funding for current federal programs, the bill to reauthorize the Autism CARES Act directs the National Institutes of Health to conduct research aimed at improving outcomes for kids and adults with autism. Similarly, the bill would amend existing law to reflect the need for research, surveillance, education, detection and intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorder of all ages, not just children, lawmakers said. The renewal would also require officials at the Department of Health and Human Services to report to Congress on the progress of federal autism efforts and on the health and well-being of kids and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. And, the legislation would direct the Health Resources and Services Administration to issue grants for developmental-behavioral pediatricians in underserved areas. The Senate version of the bill was introduced by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo.

The Holiday Season is upon us and so is the end of the first semester of school. How are you, as a parent feeling about your child's IEP? Is the IEP implemented in all school classes and activities? Is the IEP signed? Are you satisfied with all of the goals, accommodations, modifications and supplemental aides and services? Finally, do you feel the IEP Team is working in your child's best interest? If you can answer "YES" to all of these questions, GREAT! If not, and you are ...having some difficulties with your team, send me a Private Message telling me your concerns and areas which need to be addressed. If you need an Advocate, but the prices are too high, let me know and I will answer all of your questions regarding billing. You will be surprised how affordable my services are. The school year is moving fast and the clock is ticking, make sure your child's IEP is in place and all school professionals are implementing your child's IEP. If you have any questions or concerns, please call, text or send me an email. I look forward to hearing back from anyone in San Diego who is in need of an Educational Parent Advocate, Sincerely, Richard Spindler, M/S Parent Advocate Graduate Professor/Autism Research 619-341-3595 [email protected] See more

The start of a new school year can be stressful. A new school year brings hope, new milestones reached and sometimes push back from your IEP Team. The role of being a Parent Advocate is an important one. As an Advocate myself I take satisfaction in building bridges between IEP Teams and Parents. I am passionate about the family and school keeping only one thing in mind, what is necessary to set up an academic, social, and behavior program to support the student and set h/her ...up for success. I work in San Diego County as a Parent Advocate, and have had much success. This is my second career. For 20 years I was a Special Day Class Teacher, Resource Specialist and Behavior Specialist for PUSD. This experience,(being on both sides of the table) gives me great insight into what the school is willing to provide in the way of Special Education Services, as apposed to what they should provide. Presenting in a positive way and willing to negotiate in some areas is important when walking in to an IEP Meeting. I believe in Advocacy for ALL, with that being said, my billing makes it possible for all who are in need of a Parent Advocate, as my price/hr. is very affordable. In addition if you think you might need an Advocate I am happy to conference with new parents for an hour at no charge. For more information either call, email or text me. I look forward to assisting you in the sometimes confusing journey of Special Education. Richard Spindler, M.S. Graduate Professor 619-341-3595 [email protected] See more
