A good tool kit is a must for any RV owner. At some point you’ll need to make minor repairs, so screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and a hammer should be a part of the kit.
Did you know that commercial RVs have been used for over a hundred years? It all started back in 1910. Before then, there were a few individual units that people built by hand, but 1910 was when the first car campers were introduced.
One of the most difficult tasks to get used to will be learning how to park your RV. Here’s a tip: Pick up a few orange plastic cones used to mark soccer fields and mark off space in an empty parking lot. Practice backing into the space as well as head-on turns until it’s second nature.
One useful feature to look for when purchasing an RV is a backup monitor. This is a camera mounted in the back of the motorhome that enables you to better see what you’re doing when your vehicle is in reverse. This is also a great way to keep an eye on your towed vehicle.
RVs are growing in popularity in recent years. In fact, a study has found that among U.S. households that have never owned an RV, more than 1 in 7 expressed interest in buying one in the future.
If you'd like an RV but would rather not buy a pickup truck to tow it with, then you're going to need to make do with a smaller, lighter trailer. You're also going to need to have your car fitted with a tow hitch so it can take on the job.
The decision to purchase an RV is a big one, but studies indicate that owners of recreational vehicles are satisfied with their decision. In fact, 70 percent of current RV owners in a 2011 survey said they plan to buy another RV in the future.
Do you have a friend or family member who owns an RV? Bring them along when you start shopping. Because they’ve been down the buying road before, they know what questions to ask and what to look for.
The first motorized campers came out in 1910. They were called camping trailers and were often made from parts taken from 3-ton Packard trucks. Some campers were 28 feet long and could sleep 11 people.
Consider the traffic flow of your RV before purchasing it. For example, if you have a lot of kids, you may want to keep the kitchen at one end so that the cook isn't constantly interrupted by in-and-out traffic.
Will this be your first RV? If so, plan to practice driving it before taking a long trip. Find a big parking lot and work on turns, backing up, and pulling a trailer (if it’s something you’ll be doing).
Before choosing an RV, think about how you plan to use it. Some motor homes and campers are designed for the occasional weekend trip, while others are built with the "full timer" in mind.
If you want to get into RVs, you'll be glad to know that there are models available for just about every budget. Typically, new ones will run you anywhere from $10,000 to more than $300,000 so you can choose whatever works best for you.
