We are excited to announce our first-ever Joseph Ileto Courage awardee is the late John Eric Swing. John Eric might be recently best known for his role as the executive director of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA). John Eric was a longtime community organizer, decorated veteran, and advocate for Asian American causes. John Eric was fiercely dedicated to the Filipino community. He held various leadership positions in many different Filipino-serving organizations an...d events like FilAm ARTS' Festival of Pilipino Arts and Culture (FPAC) and Filipino American Service Group (FASGI). He served on the board of the Coalition of Filipino American Chambers of Commerce (COFACC). Together with the Ileto family, we are honored to celebrate the life of John Eric Swing as the inaugural awardee of the Joseph Ileto Courage Award. May we continue to let the spirits and legacies of both Joseph Ileto and John Eric Swing guide us as we continue to serve our communities and create positive change.

The Asian American community faces many challenges when voting by mail. They include a lack in both candidate outreach and in-language outreach about the voting process. One of the main reasons Asian American ballots are rejected is because of a mismatched signature, which for many immigrants is a foreign cultural practice.
Elected officials have a choice: Continue to alienate Asian American voters by using racially divisive language and lose those voters forever, or adopt inclusive policies and language. #AAPIVote
In 1999, Joseph Ileto was murdered at the hands of a White supremacist in the San Fernando Valley. After his death, Advancing Justice-LA worked with his family to call for justice for Joseph. Last year, we recognized 20 years since his killing, and named an award in his honor, which will go to an individual who exemplifies strength and courage, much like Joseph and the Ileto family have been in their advocacy for gun control and hate crime awareness. Tonight at our Virtual Gala, we continue that legacy, gathering with our community to continue the much needed work of fierce advocacy and justice. Join us to find out who this year’s Joseph Ileto Courage Awardee will be. We will be streaming live on our website, Facebook and Youtube.
