You may not realize this, but being a mother automatically makes you a ninja. You may not have the traditional cache of weapons. There's a bottle where the nunchucks might be as so forth, but you are tactical, prone to spying, stealth, unseen and unheard at night and constantly strategizing. More than anything, mothering, much like martial arts is a practice of harnessing one's own self. [ 194 more words. ] https://afieldguidetohealth.wordpress.com//02/moms-are-nin

I think we can all agree that a moment out of the bustle of the day creates some room for relaxation, reflection and assimilation. So, arguably, doing nothing is part of fueling productivity. What we can’t all agree about is the role of coffee fueling wellness. Here’s a summary of the vast research: Coffee is a potent source of antioxidants [ 152 more words. ] https://afieldguidetohealth.wordpress.com//coffee-is-the-n

Caffeine is not evil (as demonstrated in this post), but in pregnancy it’s role is controversial. Caffeine includes not only coffee, but also soda and some over the counter medications. We’re all entitled to a vice, and coffee, for instance, is one way that most of the world gets not only it’s pick-me-up, but also antioxidants, but in pregnancy, it’s a different story. No. I'm not mocking morning sickness. This misnomer for an affliction that can and does strike at any time of day is no laughing matter. To the contrary this drink is a way for you to assuage dehydration, get some palatable nutrients and cheers pregnancy-style to "it's five o'clock somewhere." In addition to being very hydrating, this drink is rich in magnesium, fiber, enzymes and good source of beneficial fats and oils. Chinese embryology converges and diverges with Western fetal development. The first month of pregnancy is correlated with the Chinese Liver. I've capitalized the organ in this context to differentiate the western idea of the organ (and it's direct functions) from the Chinese medicine concept of the organ itself and the set of associations related to that organ. These associations, which admittedly can seem bazaar, tend to inform interesting connections and potential ways to care of both you and your developing baby. Fiddleheads are edible parts of a fern that aptly named, look like the scroll at the top of a fiddle. I can comment on this because every week I go to Amazing Grace music shop to saw through a few tunes with my fiddle group. So, once you identify these (and by these I specifically mean Ostrich fern fiddleheads, not those other pesky, carcinogenic species*) at your local Farmer’s Market or boutique grocer, you’re ready to round up some friends for a gourmet hoedown. As I unfurl this inaugural post, it seems fitting to start A Field Guide to Health with an investigation into ferns. This is amongst other things an homage to Oliver Sacks who I admire as a deep and creative health detective, with a penchant for the unique and of course, an avid fern lover. My own initial foray into plants and medicine took me many years ago through Chinese medicine school, and more recently (accompanied by a friend who built a Swedish Stuga) to UC Berkeley to learn from a fern expert.
