MY OSCAR NOMINATION CONTRIBUTION MY EXPERIENCE at The OSCARS The SECOND time I attended the OSCARS was in 1987 via invitation in support of my first feature ...film as a young budding professional actor. That film was Oliver Stone’s Salvador which was nominated for Best Picture. The film’s opening scene {THIS CLIP} featured me along with a beautiful young actress by the name of Maria Rubel, whom I had shared the stage with a year prior in Jean Genet’s play The Balcony at The Odyssey Theatre {co-directed by the late Steve Kent and Eric Trules}. Salvador starred Elpidia Carrillo along with James Woods who was nominated for Best Actor. Others in the film were the great John Savage, Juan Fernandez, Art Bonilla. It was an exciting time for me to attend the Oscars. "Salvador" lost out to "Platoon" Both films written and directed by Oliver Stone. After developing a relationship with Oliver Stone on "Salvador", I was close to co-starring in "Platoon". Oliver wanted me in the film. Had the script while doing "Salvador". Packaging/Studio politics over took the friendship promise and desire sadly. The FIRST time I attended the OSCARS was in 1984. I and my dear friend, actor Eddie Velez managed to get invited. When we arrived, Prince had just gotten out of his Limo in front of us. Purple Rain was nominated for Music of which he won. I recall me and Eddie in the elevator at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion {where the Oscars were held then} headed to the lounge when the elevator door opened and Kirk Douglas along with Burt Lancaster entered engrossed in conversation. It was just me and Eddie Two young actors pinching each other that we were in the elevator eavesdropping on Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster conversation Just the four of us. It has been an awesome journey. I am just getting started.
