From Richard's sister To all the friends, ex-coworkers, bridge players and associates of my brother, Richard Meffley, who is now resting in peace with those who have gone before him. My brother Ralph & I would like to express our thanks, appreciation, prayers and condolences that have been shared. Due to the pandemic we will be unable to have a memorial service for Richard at this time, but we are planning a virtual celebration of his life and we need help from those who kn...ew him best to make it a success. We are asking that anyone who has photos of Richard they would like to share, or who would like to make a video message, to upload them to https://bit.ly/3iDgdbF by Wednesday, September 30th. We will be compiling the videos and putting together a video which will be uploaded to YouTube the week of October 5th. Thank you in advance for your participation and your condolences, we will be in touch when the video link is available. See more

Richard and I had played one tournament together..in March 2015. we discussed our system for 5 minutes about. The previous day, my team lost in quarterfinal of Vanderbilt and I felt more like playing than taking the dark of my room . He was a focused and discreet man but one board made him laugh for a while. I opened 1NT (15-17) and he replied 4 clubs. I thought it shows both majors so bid 4 spades. In fact this was gerber bid asking me for aces...... Then he bid 5 clubs, I didn’t know what was happening so I bid 5 heart like waiting. Now we came with 7NT. Actually, 5 clubs was asking number of kings. It turned out that 4 spades and 5 hearts were the correct answer as I had 2 aces and one king... We laugh about what damages can a non experienced French American partnership can cause. We made it to day2 of Swiss With geeske and will, and that was enough to be player of the year with almost no margin at the end of 2015. I owe them this little points that have made the difference. Thanks Richard. My condoleances and best support to his family and friends. See more

Hi everyone I was asked if i could write a paragraph or two on the bridge winners site regarding Richard’s passing. For those not familiar with it, it’s a bridge site for advanced players where very heavy discussions take place on any bridge topic. ...Continue reading

Richard Meffley Sept 2,1950- Sept 10, 2020 Grand Life Master and D21 board member... This is from when Richard won his GLM status: CELEBRITY STATUS Hey members - Unit 522 has our very own bridge celebrity right here in Fresno! It is my honor to announce that Richard Meffley has just reached the milestone of "Grand Life Master". To do this you have to have done two things: first, to have a National Title and secondly, to have accumulated 10,000 master points. To have 10,000 points makes you a Platinum Life Master but Richard has combined that by also winning the Open Pairs Two Day, Four Session National Event at the Kansas City Spring Nationals in 2001 with Jim Tritt. Richard's parents taught him to play bridge at an early age. He graduated from Bullard High School before going on to Davis. While at Davis he started a new bridge club and also played in Sacramento. After graduating from UC Davis in 1972 Richard returned to Fresno and works for the IRS. He has been a member our our unit since 1967, at that time playing in the evenings as one of the "young kids" remembers Maggie Mahaffey. When our unit was with District 22 Richard was the Vice President and also in charge of the GNT's and NAP's. Now with District 21 Richard is not only our unit President but also our representative to the District Board and a member of the Board of Governors. In 1987 Richard took classes taught by Audrey Grant to improve his teaching techniques and continues to operate small groups and teach lessons. He also attends most Nationals which occur three times a year around the United States
