Do you know how aluminum recycling works? When recycled, the cans are chopped up, then heated to remove the paint coating. The pieces melt and mix in a vortex furnace. Perhaps the biggest reason for recycling is to reduce the amount of garbage being sent to landfills. Landfill usage peaked in the 1980s, when Americans sent almost 150 million tons of garbage to landfills each year.
