HAPPY TAILS - LOUIE Louie’s story begins as a young, very sick kitten, trapped in San Jose. His trappers took him to the vet and tried to help him but it just wasn’t enough to get him well and he was really struggling to even breathe. He would just sit curled up in a ball and his eyes would be filled with running tears and he would struggle to have any energy at all. We knew he could not survive like that so we offered to bring him into AARF’s foster care and went to work w...ith our own vet, testing and treating and and more tests and more treatments and just about trying everything we could do to heal this sweet kitty. After nearly 2 months of care, we have finally got him to a point where he can breathe again and he is feeling so much better. A few weeks ago, he started to really want to play and have friends and be a part of the pack at his foster home. He’s been having such a blast being a normal and healthy kitty! In fact, he fits in so well with his foster pack, that his foster parents decided they can’t ever let him go. He’s such a sweet and darling boy and loves his foster family so much that they have made it official and adopted him!! Congratulations to sweet Louie and to the entire Gamache crew! HAPPY TAILS - MILLIE We rescued Millie back in November when her owner had to urgently leave the country. We didn't want her to fall into the wrong hands so made arrangements to get her into a foster home immediately. Millie just got adopted by the wonderful Ramirez family and now has two doggy BFF's to show her the ropes and two little brothers who are excited to play and cuddle with her. HAPPY TAILS: CHARLES Charles’ story begins when he was found out wandering alone and crying for some help. Well, he sure found the right humans to help him because they happened to also be AARF fosters and they knew we could find him the happily-ever-after he was out searching for. We never could find who owned him before he found us, so we set out to find him a new forever family. Now Charles has three sweet human kids and a kitty sister to call his own. HAPPY TAILS - MARSHA From the street life to the sweet life! Marsha’s story begins with us as a young feral cat who had just given birth to a litter of six kittens outside of a hotel in a busy area. They were not safe there and so she was trapped and her and the babies were brought into our foster care. She was a wild mama for sure; parkcouring off the walls of her foster room from fear and we assumed she’d return to a feral life once her mama duties were over. Boy were we ...surprised because as soon as all of her babies were adopted, she did a full 180 and became a head bumping, playful, cuddly sweet kitty. No street life for you missy!! TODAY is National Pit Bull Awareness DAY This day was established in 2007 as a nationwide effort to bring positive awareness and attention to the Pit Bulls and their responsible owners. Pit Bulls were once a proud American icon. The whole month of October is now dedicated to Pit Bull awareness and this cause is very near and dear to our hearts at AARF. Pit bull Awareness Month is dedicated to helping restore the image of the American Pit Bull across the US. Meet REBA This darling girl who we have named Reba ended up at the shelter and as with so many strays, no one came for her. The shelter environment was not the place for this shy, timid girl and she started to shut down and when we were asked if we could take her, we knew we had the perfect foster to help sweet Reba. Happy MOO Year!! Our darling MOO MOO has put 2020 behind her and all that it’s taken for her to be healed, and now she is ready to search for her forever family! She is a tri-pod dog and that’s considered special needs, but we assure you she is incredibly capable and nothing stops her. She will need a family that can accommodate her, and have a home without an open pool or anything that she would never be able to safely navigate on her own. We would prefer an adopter with experience with her breed type as well, since brachycephalics have their own set of needs and so we’ll only be considering applicants that know how to best care for her. Moo is super social and loves to play with other dogs, so we will be looking for a home where she will have a bestie to do fun pup stuff with and where she’ll get a lot of attention and training and socialization. After all, she’s still a young puppy and needs all the same things 4 legged puppies do. Moo Moo loves everyone she meets. She’s incredibly friendly and outgoing and affectionate. She has been living in a foster home with other dogs, cats/kittens and kids, and loves absolutely everyone which helps make her an amazing family pet. UPDATE for HOPE Monday evening our precious HOPE had her puppies! She delivered four sweet babies, three boys and one girl. It has been a challenging few days as Hope has not been able to produce enough milk and we needed to start supplementing with formula. Unfortunately, the puppies did not take to the bottle well and we are now tube feeding to make sure that they thrive. ... It’s New Year’s Eve and it’s time for Champagne!! Introducing our ‘champagne’ litter MOËT, KRUG, DOM and VEUVE! A few weeks ago, these stunning kittens were living outdoors as tiny babies but were captured and became AARF babies. They have been getting healthy and strong in foster care and growing into bubbly little love bugs. They look bigger than they really are with all their fluff, so they aren’t quite ready for adoption just yet, but will be soon in the new year! Th...ey need to finish up their necessary medical and then we’ll announce when they are ready to start the search for their forever families. HAPPY TAILS - JAX Jax is one lucky fella! He didn’t have the easiest start in life but he sure is going to have an amazing life moving forward. Trudi Souza is one of our awesome fosters and has been looking for the perfect pup to train as a service dog, and it was a match made in heaven. LEELA UPDATE Just look at this beautiful girl, her eye was successfully removed and it has healed up so nicely. Despite losing her eye, Leela can lead a completely normal life and this little setback will not affect her at all We rescued this precious girl when she was surrendered to the emergency hospital two weeks ago with an extremely severe eye trauma. Did you know that AARF rescues about 100 kittens every year? In 2020 however, this has been a record year for us and we have rescued over 300!! Our kitten program is largely managed behind the scenes and the majority of the kittens we rescue are often injured, very ill, orphaned, pre-weans, or require medical or surgical interventions. We have a team of dedicated and experienced fosters that are prepared to give each kitten exactly what it needs to survive and thrive. This... is an incredibly labor intensive program and there’s often not enough time to announce each one on social media as our team is overwhelmed with their care for about 9+ months of the year. Sometimes it feels like it’s always kitten season at AARF though, like this year. We even have pre-weans in December!! We have one of the lowest cat adoption fees of most rescues and so our adoptions never truly cover the expenses we incur for our kitten program. The program can only exist with the support of our generous community donors. Are you looking for a year-end charitable tax deduction? UPDATE and PUPPY WATCH We wanted to give everyone an update on our precious HOPE and thank everyone who donated towards her emergency care. As soon as Hope was stable enough, she was released from the emergency hospital and into her foster home with us. We continued with the care she needed, treating her infection and gave her lots of TLC to help build up her strength. ... Last Thursday, Hope had her surgery by our own vet and we are so happy to say that everything went well and her bladder stones were successfully removed. It was determined that she was further along in her pregnancy than first thought so this was great news for the health of her puppies. We are now on "puppy watch" and she is due any day now! This is an exciting time and we will keep everyone updated on her status. We currently have them in two separate foster homes. Tony is settling in well with his foster family and is happy, confident and social. Lily is having a harder time, she is shy and it is taking her a little more time to warm up to strangers. Lily in particular will need a quiet home where she can decompress and slowly learn to trust. Max's senior owner just recently passed away and unfortunately his family were unable to take him. Max is three years old and we believe he is a mix of Basset Hound/Jack Russell Terrier but who knows. What we do know is that he is adorable Max is great with children, likes other dogs but not cats, he is easy going and just loves to snuggle. HAPPY TAILS - MISSY This sweet girl first started her journey with us after being surrendered to be euthanized at the vet, because she was believed to be FELV+. We welcomed her into the AARF family with open arms, as we were willing to do what we knew was going to be the difficult task of finding a family willing to adopt a cat with a possible limited life expectancy. We also know that the snap tests for such young kittens are often unreliable so we retested her but receiv...ed the same disappointing results. Once she passed the 6 months of age mark, something was nagging at us to do an advanced serum test just to be absolutely sure. To our surprise and delight her test came back NEGATIVE for the Felv virus and she is 100% healthy and normal! Just about a week later, we are ecstatic again for this darling girl because she has found her happily-ever-after! Her new human girl came to meet Missy out in her Catio at her foster home, and her foster mom told us, it was love at first sight for them both! It was just supposed to be a meet and greet, but they were inseparable and didn’t want to be apart even for a day, so it quickly turned into an adoption! Happy tears all around! Happy Tails - BEIGNET & STRUDEL This darling sister duo were found in the middle of a street here in town one night and it was like they had just appeared out of nowhere. They were clean and had no fleas and were very healthy with not a hint of a feral life. This is not the condition we typically find kittens in, so we suspect they might have been left by someone, which is just heartbreaking. Four week old kittens cannot really fend for themselves and are not street savvy... so often do not survive. We are so grateful these sweet girls found their way into the safe arms of an AARF rescuer that night. Now Beignet and Strudel have found a sweet family of their own with human kids they just adore, and big loveable pooch Gus to watch over them! Congratulations to the entire Mannina family! Happy Tails - JACK We were asked to help our shelter by pup-sitting over the four day Thanksgiving break. We of course said load ‘em up! and our always agreeable foster Val Wood, transformed her home into a puppy playground for them! After the 4 days were up, they returned to the shelter to be fixed and all of them found homes that same day! We were thrilled for all of them. However, a few days later we heard one of them had been returned to the shelter and so Val rush...ed right down and adopted him. He had been one of her favorites and she thought he’d fit in nicely with her pack. Val knows that puppies need socialization so she let some of the neighborhood kids take some covid-safe turns, giving him attention to provide him with some new experiences. Well, a family from just two doors down had been searching for just the right first pup with no luck, and absolutely fell in love with him. Val did some soul searching and as much as she loved him, she knew that he would be happiest with a houseful of humans to dote on him and give him all that he needs and more, to thrive! Congratulations to the Hammel family and to darling Jack, for this sweet twist of fate and thank you Val for helping him find his forever family! HAPPY TAILS: EDDIE & ALEX We rescued these tiny boys from the shelter because they were a bit underweight and had kitty colds and needed medical attention. The legend Eddie Van Halen had just passed and so we paid homage to him by naming these darling boys, Eddie and Alex. They got healthy quickly under the TLC of their foster family and they were ready to start the search for their forever family. Turns out their new family was living right next door to their foster hom...e!!! They popped over to meet the boys one day, and it was love at first sight! RESCUED Meet ZELDA! She is beautiful, smart, loving, gentle and friendly. Zelda is a one year old Collie mix with no training but her new life starts now and she is already embracing it. She wants to please and is exceptionally smart; she will be an AMAZING addition to an active family who has the time and patience and also knowledge of high energy breeds.... Unfortunately, people get high drive, active dogs when they have no idea what it takes to own a dog like Zelda. This is exactly what happened here and she was returned because she became too much for her previous owner. Zelda will need training and socialization; training a Collie should be a life-long commitment because they can become easily bored, they need to be mentally and physically stimulated to stay healthy and happy. Collies love to learn and are eager to please, you just need to be committed. We want to do right by this girl, so we will be looking for a person/family who has experience with the breed. Zelda gets along with other dogs, loves everyone she meets but small children would not be the best fit as she does jump up and is very strong. The Ashford’s lost one of their beloved kitties recently and had been looking for another companion for sweet Paisley. They were constantly searching our page and everywhere else, but none seemed just right. They said they’d know when they saw it. Meanwhile, a state away, their daughter w...as also searching online for them and stumbled across Muffin’s picture during the brief few days she was available online and sent her picture to her Dad who said, that’s the one! RESCUED Meet JOY We all know that the shelter is no place for a 2 lb, 5 week old puppy, so when one of the shelters reached out to us for help, we of course said an astounding YES! ... We have had sweet Joy for nearly a week and she is doing amazing. She is eating on her own, has found her voice and letting everyone in her foster family know that she’s around. She is playful, a cuddle bug and wants to be close to someone all the time; this has a lot to do with being separated from her mama and siblings at such a young age. Joy will need a home with another dog, she has missed out on developing important social behaviors from her mother, and another dog will help with her primary socialization period. HAPPY TAILS: FLAPJACK Flapjack’s story begins the night he was rescued from the middle of a freeway exit here in town. The driver wasn’t sure what he was seeing but as he passed it, he realized it was a kitten and stopped and jumped out to grab it!! Thank goodness for his quick thinking, kind heart, and for making sure this baby found his way to AARF. We have no idea how such a tiny boy was where he was but based on the area, we have to assume he could have been tossed the...re. We searched the freeway area for more kitties or evidence of a dumping of a litter, but found nothing more. Whatever happened, fate was definitely on Flapjack’s side that night and we are so grateful his life was saved! Now Flapjack has joined the Lu-Wei family and has a new big sister of his own, named Stormy. RESCUED Meet KHLOE This darling girl was being passed around and finally the last time was to a teenager and her Grandma stepped in and said "no more". Grandma reached out to us and asked if we could find this girl a forever home. #grandmasrule... Khloe is around 7 months old and is a Lab/Pit mix. The day we got her she was wearing a bandana around her neck and it wasn't until we removed it, we saw how red and irritated her neck was. Khloe has now been seen by our vet, is on medication and is already feeling so much better. The extremely shy girl we met that first day is now playful, loving, silly and a BIG cuddle bug. Meet KODA This sweet boy was owner surrendered to us, he is 7 months old and is a PomChi, which is a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. Koda is a typical puppy, he is on the go non stop and then crashes. Meet RANGER This handsome boy is around 9 months old and is a Shepherd/Lab mix. He weighs around 50 lbs so is going to be a medium sized dog. Ranger is exceptionally smart, he already knows quite a few commands and is very treat motivated so is easy to train. We asked his foster mama for some adjectives to describe this sweet boy and her list was long but here are a few she shared; affectionate, curious, shy, cuddly, protective, friendly, lovable, brave. She also said... that while he hesitates when he meets new people or dogs, he warms up quickly. We would like to see Ranger in a fairly active home and with a family/person who has experience with really smart breed dogs; socialization and continued training for him is a must. A home with teens or older would be fine, he is good with other dogs if introduced properly and does not seem to have a high prey drive so could possibly do well with cats but we have not cat tested yet. To donate to our #GivingTuesday fundraiser, please click here: https://bit.ly/39oyUxO This summer, we were asked to step into an emergency situation in nearby Hollister when a caretaker of nearly 100 cats/kittens was tragically killed. All of these cats had no resource for any food and so we immediately went to work to save them all. Every single cat on the property was trapped, fixed and received a full medical update. Some of the cats were suffering from injury or disease ...as well as some with embedded foxtails in gums and eyes, and we were able to provide every cat what they needed, even though there are no available medical services in that County, especially during a pandemic. Because of the support of our community, we were able to pay for private veterinary services for all of them; every single cat and kitten. Most of the dozens of kittens were sick so all of them became part of AARF and were healed and now have wonderful forever families. Most of the adult cats were successfully relocated to new safe barn homes and just a handful of cats remain on the original property to live out their golden years with a dedicated caretaker who feeds them with a regular supply of food provided by AARF. This was a huge undertaking and an expensive one, and we could not have done it without the financial support of this amazing community. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a critical area of focus for AARF in our community. Our TNR teams are hard at work just about every day of the year. AARF works very closely with our local shelter to coordinate all of the TNR surgical appointments for the entire unincorporated County, Morgan Hill and Gilroy, as well as provide trap loans and training throughout our large community. TNR is essential to not only control the overpopulation of cats, but also to prevent the unnecessary suffering of so many cats and the kittens born into hostile conditions. Our community trappers are the unsung heroes always working quietly behind the scenes and without all the flash and fanfare but are a vital piece of the rescue efforts of a community. Meet HALLIE It has been more than 30 days since this sweet girl was found running in the streets and we just can't believe that no one came looking for her. Her stray hold is now complete and she is officially an AARF pup. Hallie is around 2 years old and we think a Maltese/Wire Haired Terrier. She has such a wonderful personality; she is great with other dogs (big and small), loves cats and children and just about everyone she meets. Her favorite things include "zoomi...es" and going on walks. Hallie is a snuggle bug and loves to climb up on the sofa or snooze in bed and is always up for belly rubs. As much as Hallie likes to snuggle, she is also adventurous, loves car rides and adapts well to most situations. Her foster mama just took her to the mountains and she loved the snow We would like to see Hallie in a home where she will get lots of attention and not be left alone for too long. Update for HOPE and her puppies We are heartbroken to be sharing the sad news that we lost one of the puppies on October 28th, the little girl who we had named SABLE This precious girl will be forever in our hearts. Her brothers BADGER, RUFUS and OTTER are getting stronger every day but still need round the clock care. We saw that HOPE was having a hard time, she instinctively knew that she wasn't producing enough milk and was unable to satisfy her babies, she became e...xtremely anxious, even trying to hide and bury her puppies. For the health and well being of the puppies and Hope, we separated them and all three baby boys are continuing to thrive under the loving care of their foster mama. We are so grateful to Vicki Herrick, this has not been an easy task; the puppies feeding schedule has been intense, feedings are every three hours, their care has been constant. Our precious Hope is doing well, she has settled back into her foster home and receiving the love and attention she needs during this difficult time. Within the next few weeks, she will complete her medical and be ready to find her forever home. We will be accepting applications for Hope but because of all she has been through, we are going to be particularly selective in choosing her new home. RESCUED Please welcome JAX! Jax has been surrendered to our rescue so that we can find him a wonderful forever home that’s just right for him. ... A few weeks ago, Jax was purchased from a breeder and within just a few days, got quite ill. His owner took him to the ER where he was confirmed to have Parvo. After extensive and expensive treatment there and then some additional care continued with our county shelter, Jax has fully recovered. This ordeal made the family take a realistic look at what’s best for them long-term and also what’s best for Jax’s future. They are a growing family with a toddler and another baby on the way, and that is just not the right fit for this breed of pup. They decided that it would be best for Jax to come to AARF so we can help him find an appropriate forever home. This was not an easy decision after all they’ve been through with Jax, but they know they are doing what’s best for all. {No negative comments allowed about the previous owner - they are fully aware now of the mistake made buying from this type of breeder and could have easily just euthanized Jax but instead chose to take responsibility for his life and save it. We hope the rest of the littermates, wherever they may be, have been treated with the same kindness.} Jax is a 3 month old Belgian Malinois. He is of course adorable and as you can imagine, incredibly smart! He will be finishing up his necessary medical and be ready for adoption very soon, so we will start to accept applications for him now. Please note ~ we will only consider applicants that are experienced with his breed and committed to give Jax what he needs to thrive, including immediate training. This is a very active, working breed, with very specific needs, so we will be quite selective for his forever home. TODAY is National Pit Bull Awareness DAY This day was established in 2007 as a nationwide effort to bring positive awareness and attention to the Pit Bulls and their responsible owners. Pit Bulls were once a proud American icon. The whole month of October is now dedicated to Pit Bull awareness and this cause is very near and dear to our hearts at AARF. Pit bull Awareness Month is dedicated to helping restore the image of the American Pit Bull across the US. Meet REBA This darling girl who we have named Reba ended up at the shelter and as with so many strays, no one came for her. UPDATE for HOPE Monday evening our precious HOPE had her puppies! She delivered four sweet babies, three boys and one girl. It has been a challenging few days as Hope has not been able to produce enough milk and we needed to start supplementing with formula. Unfortunately, the puppies did not take to the bottle well and we are now tube feeding to make sure that they thrive. ... LEELA UPDATE Just look at this beautiful girl, her eye was successfully removed and it has healed up so nicely. Despite losing her eye, Leela can lead a completely normal life and this little setback will not affect her at all We rescued this precious girl when she was surrendered to the emergency hospital two weeks ago with an extremely severe eye trauma.
