#CORONAVIRUS and the OPERATING ROOM Anesthesiologists manage the airways of all of our patients, many requiring intubation or placement of mask airway to support breathing during general anesthesia. . Airway secretions are an inevitable part of our work. ... . In the SimMan picture below, a fluorescent dye was placed in the mannequins mouth minutes after the anesthesiologist manipulated the airway. 6 MINUTES later, a detection device shows that secretions are EVERYWHERE. . We are all anxious. A sniffle or a dry cough at work is essentially like peeing your pants in front of everyone. Our loved ones are wary of being around us, and rightfully so. On top of that, we have to keep working, not just the operating room but in convincing our surgeons and administrations about what is elective versus emergent. . . 1. CHANGE YOUR SCRUBS going to and from work. This has been a rule in hospitals forever, yet more than 50% of physicians and nurses are walking in on a hospital with their operating room scrubs. . 2. CONSIDER POSTPONING ELECTIVE SURGERIES and limiting contact between everyone in the hospital. Be cognizant of wards with immunocompromised or elderly patients already in critical condition. As it's been done over the past 72 hours, cancel any unnecessary meetings and convert to online forums. . 3. DO NOT RUSH TURNOVER and allow for EVS and personnel to thoroughly clean the room. Be responsible for your workstation and wipe down your monitors between each case. . 4. STOP BEING A MARTYR AND GOING TO WORK SICK. Physicians let them brag about how they've gone to work in the worst of times and have never missed a day. That is just irresponsible and idiotic. We're already overworked and abused. First rule is to protect yourself before anything. . 5.WASH YOUR HANDS or sanitize your hands anytime you touch anything. Remove and dispose of gloves after patient contact, and before touching any other surfaces. *Protect your neck and don't touch your face* . 6. SCRUTINIZE USE OF RESPIRATORS (NIOSH-approved) based on both the contingency plans placed by our hospitals, as well as clinical sense in evaluating and working with high risk patients. . . #covid19 #healthcare See more
