A Subway manager has been fired after allegedly sending a racist text message about a girl who had just applied for a job. The manager, known only as Monica, said she didn’t want ‘those people’ in her store after being told a young black teenager had dropped a job application off.

If there’s one trick skateboarder Samarria Brevard is trying to master in life, it’s the ability to live moment by moment. That can be hard to do nowadays when she’s got so many things on her mind. In the upcoming months she has her first shot at qualifying for the Olympic Games in 2020. In 2016, the International Olympic Committee (the IOC) announced that it would be adding skateboarding to the program and many skaters are gearing up for what might be their Summer Games debut. https://buff.ly/2MUTlc5

(WWJ) A pair of Lansing police officers are under fire after they were caught on body camera footage beating a 16 year-old girl because she allegedly refused to get inside the patrol car. She had tried to flee the officers' arrest attempt, per reports. When they caught her, things appeared to get ugly. Videos circulating on the Internet show a girl screaming, "Stop punching me! Why is she punching me?" while a female officer hits her. The handcuffed girl bursts into tears.

Netflix’s time-traveling thriller See You Yesterday has levels to its seemingly jaunty sci-fi exterior. The critically-acclaimed Stefon Bristol film takes a novel approach to grief over a fatal police shooting of a loved one, while supporting the notion that Black and brown kids are interested and proficient in STEM even in lieu of statistics.

More than a half-century later, something quite remarkable has happened in the world of pageants. In the year 2019, African-Americans simultaneously hold the titles in all three of the biggest beauty competitions. This year, Miss America, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA are black women. All of the pageants have had several African-American winners previously, but never all three at the same time.

On April 18th, 2019, African American Female Excellence hosted our Annual Spring Youth Forum: Sisterhood. The forum started off with an interactive gallery walk where the girls went around the room and wrote on Post-It posters asking questions regarding sisterhood. One of the questions in gallery walk was "How do you show sisterhood at your school?" Some of the answers given by the girls included: "Checking in with my friends and making sure they are doing well" "Showing resp...ect to all my sisters" "Deflecting/reversing self-hating comments" "Spreading positivity and compliments" After the reflection of the gallery walk, we came together in a circle where we discussed the critical issues and concerns that the girls face within their Oakland schools and communities when dealing with sisterhood. Many of the girls expressed how they feel as though Black girl are often put against each other which leads to the drama they often experience. We closed out the forum by coming up with possible solutions to begin resolving these current issues. The girls proposed solutions such as: More intensive family support Consistent girls circles within schools for Black girls Reducing stereotypes of the ‘angry Black girl’ Encouragement of uplifting one another
