Driving to a Winter Wonderland?! Yes, snow is expected during the Holidays. So make sure you pay close attention to these driving tips if you plan on heading up... to those beautiful mountain areas! Before you step on the gas, check weather conditions. For travel conditions use Quickmap (it’s free in your app store!). Check tires, wipers and have a full tank of gas. Make sure its all good before you leave! Long trip? Bring water, warm clothing, blankets, a charged cell phone & charger, meds, snacks & other necessary items. Maybe stuff for the kids like a coloring book with washable markers? We say washable cause its easier to clean off your seats when they get bored with the books. Bring your chains. Don’t ask, should I? just bring them. We do not care what 4X4 lifted truck or classy all-wheel drive vehicle you possess you need to bring chains. Do not put your chains on in the lanes! Pull over to a safe turnout and put them on. Put chains on at chain control locations. There are chain installers located at these checkpoints who can help install the chains on your vehicle for a fee. Look for a Caltrans ID bib to help make sure the chains are properly installed. Do not trespass onto private property. CHP is in close contact with property owners who have been advised to contact Law Enforcement immediately of trespassers. The CHP and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will respond in haste to cite or possibly arrest trespassers. Do not leave your trash, keep our mountains clean! Take what you bring with you or find a trash can and throw it away. Law enforcement will issue you a citation if you are caught, and the fine is quite large. Do not park in the roadway or no parking zones. Parking citations will be issued. If you leave your vehicle parked in a roadway, your vehicle will be towed, or pushed by emergency personnel if there is a need to render aid. DO NOT pull over into turnouts to play in the snow. We know the snow is super fun, but only play in designated snow play areas. These turnouts are not for play or to stare at the beauty of nature, they are for vehicles to pull over, chain control or emergency services. If you are not used to driving in snow, remember to slow down and leave enough room in between vehicles. Turn on your headlights, but keep your brights off! Do not turn on your emergency flashers unless you are in an emergency situation. DO NOT try to pass and go around a snow plow. You will not win this battle. You are endangering the lives of our workers, and yourself. We are plowing the roads to help you! Be patient so we can do our jobs and get you to your destination safely. And remember, please be patient. All we want is people to get to their destination safely during this holiday week. Other people are driving to visit their loved ones too, so sit back and relax. Take your time, and drive safe!

This next week we will be conducting a couple enforcement details in various parts of the Mojave area. The most prominent detail will be on US-395 where we ar...e working with CHP Barstow and CHP - Victorville. On Wednesday February 27th, CHP Mojave, CHP Barstow, and CHP Victorville will have extra units patrolling US-395 through each offices respective areas. We will each be conducting heavy enforcement of all violations, but with a focus on "primary collision factors" (speed, unsafe passing, passing over double yellow lines, following to close, yielding to oncoming traffic, and more) and seatbelt compliance (including drivers, passengers, child safety seats and more). We will be utilizing several types of vehicles to conduct this level of enforcement. Look for black and white or all white Ford Explorers, Dodge Chargers, commercial enforcement trucks, motorcycles, aircraft and possibly a couple unmarked vehicles. Follow us here and we'll keep you updated and hopefully share photos of next week's events. We look forward to the details and are thankful for the warmer weather and clear skies. Please slow down, buckle up, put down the phone, and enjoy the drive. Be kind to everyone else on the road. Friends and family please share! They are killing wrecker operators at a rate of one every 5 days across the country. Please everyone slow down and move over for flashing lights. The life you save by doing so could be yours or mine.
