Making Blended Learning Work in VET

In recent years, we have seen more and more Australian Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) evolving their teaching by incorporating blended and online delivery modes. Blended learning, hybrid education, flipped learning, digitally-led teaching,.. whatever you choose to call it, the new wave of digital evolution is making clear headway, as RTOs realise the benefits that this has brought them.

A few weeks ago, we sat down with the lovely Sophie Lanham (Futurum) to take a closer look at:

  • What, exactly, is considered blended learning?
  • What are the major benefits of this delivery mode and why would RTOs consider it?
  • Is blended learning a cause for concern, in terms of compliance?
  • Should RTOs choose a fully online delivery mode, or blended delivery?
  • What are the steps to successfully implement blended learning in an RTO?

A few key points:

There are many reasons why RTOs should consider blended learning as a delivery mode:

  • It provides more support and guidance than a fully online course. Consider your student needs: they may require a lot more tech support and hand-holding than you think.
  • A great way to cut down on delivery and operational costs.
  • Helping the RTO become less paper-heavy, eliminating human errors and non value-adding tasks.
  • Giving the RTO an ability to reach more students and scale quickly, without the huge overhead costs.
  • More face-to-face time is spent on practical skills training.
  • Responding to the requirements and preference of today’s students who are tech-savvy and enjoy collaborating with peers and teachers in real time.

When used properly, technology helps RTOs to deliver a high quality, engaging learning experience to more students AND to collect the evidence of that delivery.

It is crucial that RTOs start with a clear plan in mind:

  • What are the key strategic goals?
  • What do our students, staff, and industry need?
  • What are the learning goals and how do we assess against them?
  • Do we have the suitable teaching and assessment materials for online delivery?
  • What processes, workflows, and systems are required?
  • How do we monitor and refine the implementation process?

Is blended learning the future of RTO teaching in Australia?

Of course there is no one-size-fits-all answer here, as some training organisations will be more successful in implementing this delivery mode. However as blended and online learning become more and more common in the VET sector, it is crucial that educators have a better understanding of blended education and its possible implication.
