ZILLOW IS DOWN! This is the frantic message I keep hearing today from my clients who rely on this internet real estate portal for their home searches daily. When I turned on the news, I realized that a massive hack had taken place and that many tech websites were affected. I couldn’t help but immediately think how this would not directly affect me or my clients. After all, the main source of information on homes is coming from my local MLS which Zillow then distributes lat...er. It is a glaring reminder of how real estate is a very local business. It always has been and I believe it always will be. WHY REAL ESTATE IS SUCH A LOCAL BUSINESS As I write this, many major websites are still down, but my website with the local MLS feed is still up and running. There was a real estate business before the internet, because again, people need local experts with relative facts about specific neighborhoods. Schools, parks, and the history of a particular area are extremely important to people. The internet is great, but people and their experiences are assets that cannot always be replaced so easily by some technologies. Some things are best when kept local, like your choice of a doctor, attorney or even pizza. Personal referrals from family and friends are always the best way to get quality information when making important life decisions.
