Big Rig Transporting Vehicles Overturns, Becomes Fully Enfulfed On 11/2/2020 at approximately 10:30 pm, units from the South Sacramento CHP Area Office were dispatched to a call of a big rig overturned and fully engulfed in flames on northbound I-5 south of Laguna Blvd. Units arrived on scene and determined that this was thankfully a non-injury solo vehicle traffic collision. Preliminary investigation indicates that the big rig was traveling in the #3 lane at approximately 55...-58 mph when for an unknown reason, drifted right off the roadway and hit a the guardrail. The big rig then traveled to its left and hit the temporary k-rail in the center median. The trailer overturned as a result of the collision with the k-rail and the big rig and the car carrier trailer transporting eight vehicles became fully engulfed. The driver of the big rig was able to exit the vehicle prior to emergency personnel arrival. Personnel from the Cosumnes Fire Department responded and quickly put out the fire. All lanes of northbound I-5 were closed temporarily for several hours for clean up of the burnt vehicles. See more

Congratulations to Officers Calderon, Segura, Ferguson, and Pillman who graduated today from the CHP - Academy. The new officers, pictured here along with former South Sacramento CHP officer Hammond who now serves as a Staff Officer at the CHP Academy, were assigned to the South Sacramento CHP office for almost 7 months due to Covid-19 and did an excellent job at every duty we threw at them before returning to the CHP Academy to finish off their last seven weeks of training and earn their badges. Good luck in Field Training officers and we hope to see you back in South Sacramento one day. #252 #varsitysquad #southsac #weservecalifornia

**Freeway Pawn is back on Sacramento Freeways.** For those of you who are unaware of what freeway pawn is, here is a quick description. A driver of a vehicle, usually a rental SUV or van with an out of state license plate, pulls over to the shoulder of the freeway and pretends that his vehicle is disabled. That individual then attempts to wave people over to help them with their disabled vehicle. After a Good Samaritan pulls over to assist, the driver produces jewelry and a...ggressively attempts to sell it to the Good Samaritan. We are asking for a the public’s help in contacting and identifying these individuals. Please do not stop if you see somebody waving frantically at you to stop. Continue driving and call 9-1-1 with the location and description of the driver and the vehicle. We will send officers out to these individuals and determine if they are actually disabled motorists or individuals that are attempting to perform freeway pawn. It is extremely dangerous to stop and contact these individuals on the shoulder of the freeway. Our officers are trained to assist disabled motorists or contact individuals committing crimes on the freeway, please do not put yourself at risk. On September 16th, we posted on this Facebook page that with the help of Caltrans and Granite Construction, focus enforcement would start on I-5 due to the construction taking place due to the Fix Sac 5 project. Many of you have slowed down and we really appreciate it. Others have ignored the warning and continue to speed. Those that we observe speeding are being stopped and issued citations. Just a reminder, Interstate 5 from south of Elk Grove Blvd to the American River Bridge just north of Downtown Sacramento is a 55 mph zone. Impaired Driver Strikes CHP Motor Officer On October 3, 2020 at approximately 8:50 pm, a South Sacramento CHP Area Motor Officer was traveling US 50 westbound approaching the 10th street off-ramp on his assigned CHP Harley-Davidson motorcycle. A Ford Edge driven by a 23 year old male out of Reno, was traveling westbound US 50 approaching the 10th street off-ramp directly to the motor officers left. The driver of the Ford decided at the last moment to exit 10th Street; however... the motor officer was directly to his right. The driver of the Ford made the abrupt right turning movement anyways and the right side of his vehicle collided into the left side of the CHP motorcycle. The impact caused the motor officer to be thrown from his motorcycle and make contact with the roadway. The motor officer, a five year veteran of the CHP, was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries and released early Sunday morning. The driver of the Ford stopped at the scene and cooperated with responding officers. While asking the driver of the Ford questions regarding the collision, officers began to suspect that he was impaired. A DUI investigation was performed and the driver of the Ford was arrested for DUI and booked into the Sacramento County Jail for Felony DUI. We hate to keep repeating ourselves, but DUI traffic collisions are 100% preventable and extremely selfish. We are thankful that our officer only sustained minor injuries because this could of been a lot worse. If you are going to drink, never get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Instead, call a friend or family member, order a ride share, or call a taxi.

Ever wonder why CHP patrol vehicles are stationed within construction zones? These units are working a Construction Zone Enhanced Enforcement Program (COZEEP)detail. COZEEP is a powerful tool that effectively improves project safety through the use of supplemental California Highway Patrol Units to assist in the management of traffic passing through the construction zone. COZEEP involves the presence of the CHP in certain construction zones to serve as a reminder to the moto...ring public to slow down, observe construction zone signs, and use care while driving through the work zone. Funding for COZEEP comes from highway construction dollars. COZEEP is considered when above normal traffic problems are anticipated or unique conditions warrant additional public or worker protection. Just a friendly reminder that the speed limit for all active construction zones is 55 mph unless marked otherwise. There is an enhancement that could double the fine if you are stopped by a COZEEP unit for speeding in a construction zone so please remember to slow for the cone zone. Our officers hear many reasons from motorists about why they were speeding when we make enforcement stops, but it seems like three reasons for driving faster than the posted speed limit are heard more than others. Today, one of our officers pulled over a motorist at approximately 11:50 am for driving 99 mph in a 65 mph zone. When the officer asked the 19 year old driver why he was driving so fast, the driver gave one of the reasons we hear the most. In the comments section, ...tell us what you think the driver told our officer to explain why he was speeding this morning and what you think are the other two other most common reasons people tell our officers why they were speeding. Spoiler alert, all three of the reason are not valid excuses for speeding and it’s nothing our officers haven’t heard many times. It’s Friday and the weekend has began. Slow down, enjoy your weekend, and never drive if you are impaired or be a passenger in a vehicle being driven by somebody impaired. #speedkills #footoffthegas

This impaired driver and her passenger should be counting their lucky stars. On 9/21/2020 at approximately 10 pm, the CHP - Sacramento Communications Center put out a call of a traffic collision involving a Volkswagen Passat trapped underneath the trailer of a big rig on northbound I-5 at Hood-Franklin Road near the City of Elk Grove. Units from the South Sacramento Area responded and to their surprise, located the driver and the right front passenger of the Volkswagen walkin...g around with only minor injuries. Unfortunately for the driver, a 23 year old female out of Elk Grove, her luck ran out when officers observed signs of alcohol impairment while taking her statement. The driver was arrested for DUI and spent the night in the Sacramento County Main Jail, but at least she is alive. Just one more foot, and it is quite possible that her and the passenger could of sustained major injuries or have perished. This is another reminder of how dangerous driving impaired is. In 2018, 10,511 people died as a result of drunk-driver traffic collisions. Over a ten year period, from 2009-2018, more than 10,000 individuals died every year as a result of the selfish decision to drive impaired. Each and every one of these collisions were preventable. If you have been drinking, call a friend or family member to pick you up, call a taxi, or use a ride share, never get behind the wheel of a vehicle. #lucky #couldofbeenworse

September 20-26 is Child Passenger Safety Week. Please protect our most precious cargo. California law states that ALL children under 8 years of age must be properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat in the back seat of the vehicle. Children under 2 years of age must ride in a rear facing car seat, in the back seat of the vehicle unless they are 40 or more pounds or 40 inches in height. ... Your child’s life depends on that car seat. Make sure it is properly installed! #childpassengersafety California Office of Traffic Safety NHTSA
